The College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont seeks applicants for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position beginning in Fall, 2022. The occupant of this position will teach in the College’s Counseling Programs. The successful candidate will have an equity-centered, School Counseling background with scholarly interests in schools, families and communities. Once hired, the candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda, a strong record of peer-reviewed scholarship, and extramural support from relevant federal agencies and foundations. We invite applications at the rank of Assistant Professor. Consistent with the College’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan, we are seeking to recruit and cultivate faculty who have been historically marginalized in higher education and who will join our college in working diligently towards increased development of knowledge, understanding, and skills on issues of ethnicity, race, inequality, justice, collaboration, and respect, with the intent to encompass the broadest definition of diversity.

The College
The Department of Leadership and Developmental Sciences is situated within the College of Education and Social Services. The College’s mission is to educate and prepare outstanding professionals in education, human services and social work; engage in scholarship of high quality; and provide exemplary professional service to Vermont, the nation, and the world. We do this to contribute to a more humane and just society, free from oppression, that maximizes human potential and the quality of life for all individuals, families and communities.
The Department of Leadership and Developmental Sciences
The Department of Leadership and Developmental Sciences practices pedagogy that is grounded in culturally responsive social justice principles of expanding access to services, promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, and examining pathways to interrupting systemic barriers to positive development and healthy relationships. At the undergraduate level, we offer a program in Human Development and Family Studies, and our CACREP Accredited master’s degree programs include School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs, including a dual option. We are in the process of developing a proposal for a Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision that is due for submission for review in Fall 2021.
The Community
UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shore of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation. It offers many opportunities for collaborative partnerships in community and state-wide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.
The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that may include:
• Maintaining an active research agenda, securing extramural funding, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals;
• Teaching and advising master’s and doctoral students in the Counseling programs;
• Coordinating key activities within the Counseling programs, including oversight of curriculum; student recruitment, admissions, and advising; and budget preparation and administration;
• Collaborating with Department faculty and staff in departmental governance, program development, scholarship and service;
• Serving as an active member of relevant scholarly societies and/or professional associations; and
• Engaging in service and outreach activities at the college, university, regional, state, national and international levels. Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP accredited program;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice and experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations;
  • Scholarship agenda and record of publication commensurate with rank;
  • Record of external grant funding commensurate with rank;
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and/ graduate level;
  • Evidence of effective clinical supervision of counseling students;
  • Strong collegial, communication, and collaborative teamwork skills;
  • Hold appropriate professional counseling certifications and be eligible for licensure in Vermont; and
  • Evidence of counselor educator identity and affiliation with related professional Counseling and counselor education organizations.
