The Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) in conjunction with the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) in the area of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and will also be eligible to hold a leadership position with T-CAIREM as the Temerty Professorship in AI Research and Education in Medicine, a University Named Professorship. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor for a five-year term. The expected start date is July 1, 2022, ending June 30, 2027.

We seek applications from candidates with expertise in the development, application, and commercialization of machine learning/deep learning methodologies in medicine. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and build upon our existing strengths in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.

Applicants must have a MD degree with certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or its equivalent in any area of medicine and has expertise in computer science, data science, statistics, or related field. Alternatively, applicants must have a PhD in computer science or related discipline, by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. An MD who has been leading an independent AI-based algorithm development research program is preferred. Applicants will have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Individuals with specialized expertise in commercialization are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must highlight their commercialization experience in addition to their teaching and research experience in their application materials.


The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and lead an innovative, independent, competitive, and externally funded research program of an international caliber that focuses on utilizing artificial intelligence to transform health. Further, preference will be given to candidates with experience in commercialization of technologies involving artificial intelligence. For appropriate candidates, cross-appointments to University of Toronto’s affiliated academic hospitals may be available. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of contributions and publications in leading journals and/or conferences in the field or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, awards and accolades, with strong endorsements by referees of high international standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong endorsements by referees. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
