Job Details
Join the dynamic team in the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center (Explore Center), an academic advising unit serving Undeclared, Pre-Health, Pre-Law, and Pre-Engineering students. The Assistant Director supports the Director of the Explore Center with overall operations of the unit. This includes providing direct supervision for professional academic advisors and coordinating advisors’ training and professional development plans. Contributes to identifying unit goals and priorities and collaborates with Explore Center staff and campus partners to progress toward those goals. Leads and coordinates advising and retention programs and initiatives for first and second-year scholars in the Explore Center. Assists with data collection, compilation, analysis, and reporting to collaborate in making strategic decisions for the unit. Provides comprehensive academic advising to students in the Explore Center and understands how cultural context, differences, and institutional/social barriers influence the student experience. Provides academic and/or social support for first generation, low-income, and/or racially minoritized college students and applies inclusive advising strategies for all students. Collaborates with the Explore Center team and other campus offices to engage in best practices and to develop programming to aid student retention and success efforts.
Minimum qualifications include:
Master’s degree plus three years professional experience in higher education, including at least two years of academic advising or related 1:1 direct student contact experience required; combination of education and additional experience may substitute for master’s degree. Ability to supervise professional staff, advising programs, and processes. Demonstrated knowledge of student information systems as it relates to academic advising. Demonstrated ability to create and critically analyze office operations to ensure maximum efficiency. Demonstrated ability to form collaborative relationships with other units on campus essential. Strong writing skills and experience presenting to the public. Evidence of working in a fast paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs with verification of working collaboratively within a team environment. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student backgrounds.
Preferred qualifications include:
Five years professional experience in higher education, including three years of advising related experience desired. Supervisory experience preferred. Experience with resource allocation, strategic planning and program assessment. Demonstrated ability to research, implement, apply and share advising-related best practices on student development topics.
