The UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Architectural Design. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2022.

Recognized nationally and internationally, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design is well-known for its excellence in design, scholarship, and research. Degree programs in the department include a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (B.A.), a professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.I), a post-professional Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design (MSAUD), and a Master of Arts/Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture (M.A./Ph.D.) The three-year M.Arch.I curriculum, the largest program, prepares students for the practice of architecture by providing a focused framing of today's cultural, ecological, political and technological questions with a view to what architects may bring to bear on such complex issues. At each stage of the curriculum, AUD graduate students become equipped to not only lead the professional field but also to construct new opportunities by positioning their design imagination within a rapidly changing world. Our post-professional, MSAUD program is a ten-month research program that focuses on topics connecting architecture and urbanism with cutting edge technologies. In collaboration with innovative industry partnerships, this program is located at IDEAS, a satellite campus in Culver City.

As a leader within the public university, AUD is committed to advancing the discipline and the profession toward greater responsibility regarding environmental, civic, and spatial challenges. All programs in the department share values around architecture's agency to bring about greater equity, diversity, and inclusion in order to build the world we want to live in.

We seek candidates who are in early stages of their academic careers with clear leadership and creative potential in the design of buildings, landscapes, or cities with an emphasis on their interconnections. We are especially interested in candidates who have a focused and unique speculative design approach across a broad scale spectrum to explore the evolving contemporary challenges of environmental change and social transformation. Along with a strong design portfolio, the successful candidate will have demonstrated interest in the following subject areas:

The interconnections between architecture, urban design and landscape architecture, especially as they pertain to important contemporary issues such as environmental change and/or spatial justice.

Non-traditional design practices that elevate diversity and equity in the public sphere

Urban ecologies, urban-rural interconnection, new geographies of landscape, emerging infrastructure and built form

Global design practices that center transnational issues of environment, housing, urbanism and sustainability

Applicants must demonstrate a strong and ongoing contribution to the field, including a commitment to academic scholarship in the context of a major research university such as UCLA. A body of work with strong foundations that indicates future promise and potential for broad recognition is especially desired. Candidate qualifications must include evidence of exceptional skill at the intersection of architecture, landscape and urban design, with room for pedagogical growth in design studio teaching as well as in practice, research, and/or creative work related to design. It is preferred that candidates have three years of university-level teaching experience. We seek candidates with precisely articulated and focused interests, as well as an ability to engage in broader architecture curriculum, through a range of scales, within emerging design technologies, and across multiple disciplines.

Required for this position is a Master's Degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Urban Design degree. Responsibilities will include teaching studio and courses at undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels, research, advising and service. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The workload is determined at the discretion of the Department Chair and requires a service commitment to the Department and the University as requested by the Chair.
