The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE) is a dynamic and fast-paced team that delivers programs to Stanford's 9,000+ graduate students and 2,400+ postdoctoral scholars. We work collaboratively across the university with schools and other vice provost areas to enhance the graduate educational experience. VPGE supports programs, administration, and service to the university community and graduate students in five portfolio areas: fellowships and funding, professional development, diversity and inclusion, interdisciplinary learning, and academic guidance.

Position Summary

In alignment with Stanford's vision to have purposeful engagement and impact beyond the university, VPGE has launched the Research, Action, and Impact for Strategic Engagement, or RAISE, Doctoral Fellowship Program. VPGE is seeking a full-time director to lead the strategic vision and implementation of the program. The goal of the RAISE Fellowship Program is to support doctoral students to connect their research and scholarship to broader public impact. The 3-year fellowship program will include 20 PhD students per cohort during the pilot phase; full scale may include upwards of 100 doctoral students per cohort.

Joining in the start-up phase of the program, the RAISE Fellowship Program Director has a unique opportunity to bring a vision to life, designing and leading professional development skills and learning experiences for doctoral students at Stanford. You will work alongside leaders across the university who are committed to purposeful engagement and impact. You will have the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute your insights into systemically changing the way doctoral students are prepared to contribute to the world through their research, scholarship, and careers.

In support of the university's flexible work initiative, this position may be eligible to be “hybrid,” working both from home and the Stanford main campus. The role reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Education. This is a four-year fixed term position with possibility of becoming a permanent position.

In this role, you will:
Provide strategic oversight and operational management of the RAISE Doctoral Fellowship Program including:

• Overseeing development and implementation of professional development curriculum
• Managing the fellowship application review and selection process
• Designing and implementing communication materials and strategies for outreach, recruitment and fund-raising
• Overseeing the program budget in compliance with university policies
• Ensuring RAISE follows best practices with regard to diversity, equity, and inclusion and aligns with the university's IDEAL Initiative
• Designing and implementing program evaluation

A core part of this role also requires skills and leadership in partnership building related to:

• Identifying, building relationships with, and managing experiential placements for fellows with community, nonprofit, public, and private sector partners
• Collaborating with Stanford colleagues on professional development, community building, and partnership opportunities

You will also directly engage with doctoral students by:

• Conducting outreach and recruitment events
• Leading core professional development courses and workshops for RAISE fellows
• Supporting and managing Fellows' experiential placements with partner organizations
• Mentoring Fellows on impact-oriented scholarship and career opportunities within and beyond academia
  

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

• Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in education, non-profit, or government sectors
• Ability to lead strategic vision and operational management
• Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience managing budgets and developing financial plans
• Ability to oversee and direct staff
• Collaborative, team-focused work style

In addition, preferred requirements include:

• Doctorate-level training and research
• Teaching, mentoring, and/or curriculum development experience
