Assistant Director, Office of Career Strategy - Georgetown University Law Center

At Georgetown Law's Office of Career Strategy (OCS), we aim to promote long-term success and thoughtful, deliberate career paths to more than 1800 law students and thousands of alumni. OCS Advisors work with students to create their unique career plan, tailored to their specific needs and interests. Along the way, we provide many workshops, resources, and recruitment programs. We are committed to innovating and improving upon our own strategies for success to ensure that Georgetown Law graduates continue to be the most prepared and best equipped in the nation.

Job Overview

The Assistant Director ensures high quality advising and coaching services to all JD students, with a particular focus on international students, with focus on supporting students who do not have authorization to work in the United States or who are otherwise navigating work visas or residency requirements related to employment. They provide one-on-one career advising and coaching services to all of the first year international law students as well as any who are still seeking in the second and third years; and designs resources, workshops and programming related to international students.

In a role essential to the missions of both the OCS and the Office of Public Interest and Community Service (OPICS), the Assistant Director provides the highest quality service to all Georgetown Law students and alumni and to the day-to-day OCS management. Their expertise and full engagement with their assigned students are essential to the effective operations and high quality of services on which students depend.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of Career Strategy, the Assistant Director works very closely with their OCS and OPICS colleagues, since they take the lead in advising all international students, whether their focus is private or public sector.

The Assistant Director maintains relationships with other administrative staff (including the Office of Graduate and International Programs and the Office of the Dean of Students) and Law Center faculty to implement programming, liaison with student groups, and increased opportunities for students. They also connect with employers in order to expand opportunities for international students, and work closely with the Alumni Services team and Employer Outreach teams. And finally, the Assistant Director interacts with colleagues from other law schools through the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) and represents Georgetown Law when appropriate.


JD degree or counseling degree, with emphasis in career counseling (Note: Experience in supporting international graduate students will be considered in lieu of JD or career counseling degree.

Preferred qualifications
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the specific employment needs or experiences of international students seeking employment in the United States
  • Content understanding of legal employment opportunities for international students - in the United States and elsewhere
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and to listen to people from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Experience counseling, coaching, or advising individuals - including peers or mentees - in navigating career decisions
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity and cultural sensitivity
  • Comfort navigating, or willingness to learn how to use programs such as Symplicity, LinkedIn, and G Suite
