SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Provost for Student Success and Academic Quality (SSAQ), the Director of Career Education & Development (“Director”) provides visionary and strategic leadership for institutional-level initiatives that promote holistic career-readiness and is responsible for the management and implementation of university-wide career success strategies aligned with institutional goals and priorities.

The Director, collaborating with a career network of both internal and external stakeholders, works to implement scaled career education and career development initiatives for each stage of the student lifecycle. As the chief ambassador for Career and Professional Development, the incumbent will work with deans and other University leaders, academic departments/faculty, student services colleagues, enrollment, and advancement to create innovative partnerships, signature programs, alumni connections, and opportunities that will serve students from their first year to their post-graduate careers. The Director will lead a team of employer outreach specialists, career consultants and other career specialists to develop scalable programs that expand reach, increase engagement, enhance student and employer satisfaction, and produce effective outcomes.

The Director will oversee and implement the transformation of career services to reflect the University priorities for career success. Key priorities include collaboratively creating and communicating a unique and re-imagined vision for career education at Gallaudet that aligns with Gallaudet’s General Education curriculum and across the five schools; implementing scaled career education solutions, which are integrated into the academic fabric of the institution, and that reach the diverse population of Gallaudet students; gathering and strategically communicating big data associated with career engagement, career outcomes, and career readiness of Gallaudet students and alumni; assisting in the fundraising efforts associated with the new vision for career education; and ensuring the intentional growth of connections between Gallaudet and the employment community.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Sets strategic goals and priorities for creating a campus community culture responsible for career success through strategic partnerships with faculty, alumni, student organizations, employers, administrative and academic campus units; and designated advisory committees; oversees signature programs designed to increase career opportunities for students.
  • Supervises staff; provides on-going feedback to all employees including student workers; completes the annual performance evaluations for each regular status and extended temporary staff; set goals and expectations for each staff; resolves workplace conflicts in a timely manner and seeks support from supervisor, Human Resources, Office of Equal Opportunity Program, or Office of the Ombuds if needed; promotes a safe and healthy work environment; and ensures professional development opportunities are provided to each regular status and extended temporary staff.
  • Leads the development of a cohesive and integrated strategy for career education scaffolded within the student lifecycle including career curriculum for the Gallaudet campus and its five academic schools, ensuring all students are prepared for their future career.
  • Represents the University at professional meetings, alumni functions, employer gatherings, and student meetings including local and out-of-town travel for employer visits; and speaks for the University by making presentations, writing letters and articles and communicating information to the media, alumni, employers, graduate schools and community groups on career planning and work-related issues.
  • Oversees the preparation of career outcomes data, budget requests, related endowment accounts, and program reports.
  • Continues to evolve Gallaudet’s career education model by leveraging peers, platforms and partnerships to integrate career development into the experience of 100% of Gallaudet students.
  • Serves as an institutional resource for identifying best practices in career development by actively participating in career -services professional organizations, attending and presenting at professional conferences.
  • Expands employer engagement, both in quantity and in breadth of industries and job functions represented in differentiated educational content and in direct recruitment activities including leading various workforce-related Councils.
  • Measures meaningful programmatic success metrics, grounded in a commitment to continuous improvement, equity and inclusiveness.
  • Plans and implements job fairs and on-campus recruiting events; distribution of information on internships, summer jobs and local part-time jobs; and maintains an online recruitment system and works closely with webmasters to maintain/update career services website.
  • Promotes office to students, alumni, and employers through a variety of marketing efforts; and establishes office policies and procedures, prepares regular reports, and collects and analyzes research data relevant to the career planning and placement of students and alumni.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory Title IX reporter; and takes annual Title IX training as part of the compliance effort.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
  • SPECIFICATIONS:

    Required Minimum Qualifications (When the candidate’s resume meets these qualifications, it will be screened in.)

    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • A minimum five years of experience in career services, student program coordination, training and/or development, or a related field.
    • Evidence of management or supervisory experience.
    • Fluency in American Sign Language.
    Preferred Qualifications (While not required, it is an advantage for what the position needs.)

    • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Higher Education, Business, Leadership, or related field.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Qualities that will help the incumbent be more successful in the position.)

    • Knowledge and understanding of career development and student-centered career readiness.
    • Knowledge of and flexibility in working with diverse populations as well as at-risk students and ability to demonstrate a positive and team-oriented attitude.
    • Familiarity with career services in higher education.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
    • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
    Other Important Information:

      All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and Influenza (flu). They also will be required to submit their vaccination record prior to entering campus or by 45 days of employment, whichever is earlier. If they cannot be fully vaccinated, they may apply for a medical or religious exemption.

      The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
