Chief Objective of Position:

The University is seeking to fill multiple openings for the position of Residential Fellow. The Residential Fellow will support the Office of Residence Life in its mission to create a safe and inclusive community for all students that complements the educational mission of the University. Reporting to an Area Coordinator for Residence Life, the Residential Fellow will provide on-going support for all residential students, student staff, and professional staff. This position requires an on-call duty rotation including after-hours and weekends. This position is a live-in, 10-month position (July 15-May 15), with benefits such as health and retirement.

Work Tasks:

  • Support student staff, Resident Assistants (RAs) and Front Desk Assistants (FDAs), through regular individual meetings and weekly staff meetings.
  • Assist with on-call response for low level student concerns.
  • Provide counsel for low level roommate concerns, staff conflict, and room change processes.
  • Evaluate and participate in regular residential curriculum planning and implementation to include; accurate tracking and reporting of RA interactions.
  • Provide support for hall and building-wide programs and provide resources for various RA initiatives.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day to day front desk needs of designated building.
  • Participate in student staff recruitment and selection process.
  • Review and maintain documentation for building operations (i.e. facilities and supplies).
  • Contribute to University-wide programming efforts, including, but not limited to; orientation, welcome week, admission events, and commencement.
  • This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
  • Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
  • Reviews and communicates safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.

Required Education:

Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from Christopher Newport University at time of start date.

Preferred Education:

December 2021 or May 2022 graduate of Christopher Newport University.

Experience Required:

The successful candidate will have significant and active engagement in the co-curricular and academic life of CNU, to include involvement with faculty, administrators, and other students in addition to demonstrated experience providing leadership to peers.

Experience Preferred:

Previous student employment with the Office of Residence Life or consistent membership to the Residence Hall Association (RHA).
