The Finance and Accounting Principal Professional (1.0 FTE) carries out accounting and financial activities for the Division of Medical Oncology. Functions include general accounting, budget, financial analysis and audit, reporting, accounts payable and receivables, government cost reimbursement, contract administration, cashiering, cash management/ banking, investments, treasury and audit.This position will be responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed fully independently. The Finance and Accounting Principal Professional reports to the Division Administrator for the Division of Medical Oncology.Examples of Work Performed:Accounting and Finance
Serves as an expert Finance Professional and resource for faculty and staff in the Division.Procurement
- Develops and maintains spreadsheets, databases, dashboard reports and other analysis instruments for tracking and monthly and quarterly reporting; prepares material for periodic presentations regarding the financial state of the division and monthly reports for faculty and the Division.
- Disseminates financial reports and/or helps with interpretation of reports related to physician clinical activity, grant funds, and faculty salary distribution as well as ICR and state funds for the Division
- Reconciles accounts and charges for multiple financial systems, including University, CU Medicine and the CU Foundation.
- Responsible for the management and oversight of the grant and contract operations of the post award program for the Division including: develops and provides monthly financial reports for faculty regarding post-award grant funding, subcontract initiation and monitoring, and other finance duties for post-award grant management.
- Responds to requests for information; researches financial data, and troubleshoots discrepancies and initiates journal entries or other corrective adjustments.
- Compile, review and prepare financial information to assess whether revenues and expenses are on target to meet budget forecasts for the Division.
- Using available resources, position will investigate discrepancies and incorporate feedback to ensure accurate financial reporting. This position will also assist with annual budget proposals and other financial analyses as requested.
- Prepares and monitors selected central budgets (CU Medicine, ICR, auxiliary, enrichment, and clinical contracts).
- Advises, educates or trains individuals in the Division on processes and policies.
- Assesses systems and demonstrates initiative in making suggestions for streamlining, cost savings, improving workflow or other process improvements.
- Assists with the academic incentive program involving three key areas including research, publications and service. This involves a complex spreadsheet to gather the information from a variety of sources and calculate the distribution annually.
- Oversees the Fiscal Staff for the Division who assists with Divisional finance activities.
- Backup for other fiscal staff for entry of Payroll Expense Transfers when necessary to ensure compliance with CU Medicine and University policies
Operations/Facilities and Equipment Coordination
- Coordinates divisional purchasing activities, including delegation of purchasing responsibilities and adherence to purchasing policy, acquisition of capital equipment items. Maintains high expertise of University procurement systems & policies.
- Serves as a fiscal staff member and coordinate other procurement related activities and policies, including purchase orders, payment vouchers, INs and a variety of other instruments in both the State and CU Medicine fiscal systems.
- Provides expertise and training as appropriate in purchasing activities, including purchasing responsibilities and adherence to purchasing policy, to faculty and staff.
- Serves as the Division facilities coordinator overseeing general operations, facilities and equipment needs for Division laboratory space.
- Space and inventory coordinator and contact for the Division.
- Acts as overall capital equipment inventory coordinator and space coordinator for all State assets, accompanying reviewers on annual inventory
- Safety and compliance - manages along with the Division Administrator research assistants and others to ensure overall space/facilities/equipment upkeep of areas to meet standards related to safety, orderliness, record keeping and compliance.
- Provides concise and articulate communication to include routine contact via phone, e-mails and memos, requiring outstanding verbal and written skills.
- Communication, occurring with a variety of levels of faculty and staff in a higher education setting, will require diplomacy and tact, flexibility and the ability to maintain positive working relationships.
- Will be required to be an effective representative of the Division/University.
- Develop specific training sessions for managers and staff pertinent to new policies, systems, procedures and/or problem areas observed.

The hiring range for this position begins at $55,106 to $80,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.Optional: This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.Your total compensation goes beyond the number on your paycheck. - A bachelor’s degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
- At least 5 years of professional level finance experience.
- 7 years of experience working in a large complex public institution, higher education, healthcare or health sciences center environment
- Experience with computer programs relevant to finance, budgeting, patient accounting or other business areas at the University of Colorado (HCM, MyBI, AX, Webspace, etc.)
- Experience with post award grants management
- Knowledge of standard accounting procedures and basic math/computing skills.
- Computer proficiency with spreadsheets and databases, advanced Excel and Access skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in written formats.
- Interpersonal skills with ability to provide excellent customer service, while ensuring fiscal compliance and rules adherence.
- Must be able to work independently and be flexible and be able to maintain positive working relationships.
