The Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine and UVM Medical Center seeks applications for a physician-scientist faculty position at the Assistant Professor level on the clinical scholar pathway. The candidate must have an M.D. or D.O. and have clinical training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and be Board certified/eligible in Infectious Diseases. The candidate must also be committed to a research-focused career with the goal of becoming an independently funded physician scientist focused on global infectious diseases or vaccines, including those impacting low- and middle-income countries. The candidate should have a promising record of research growth and productivity. The candidate will be a faculty member and investigator in the UVM’s NIH-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) on Translational Global Infectious Diseases Research (TGIR). This growing research team includes faculty from across campus; including those that study global infectious diseases from biomedical (vaccines, microbiology, immunology, epidemiology) as well as computational modeling approaches. The candidate will collaborate with other TGIR faculty members and trainees and devote significant effort (65-75%) during the first years of the position focused on a defined research project aligned with TGIR goals. The candidate will participate in opportunities designed to accelerate their research career (e.g., research symposia, mentoring, career development activities) and increase competitiveness for external research funding. Salary, startup funds, and space will be provided. Clinical service will include attending on our inpatient infectious diseases consultation service at the University of Vermont Medical Center, the academic medical center providing tertiary care for over a million residents of Vermont and Upstate NY. The faculty will interact with fellows, residents, medical students, and pharmacists, as well as provide outpatient care in our Ryan White-funded HIV clinic.
There are ample opportunities to be involved in student, resident, fellow, medical staff and state-wide community education. As above, current research strengths within our program include the study of global infectious diseases including enteric infections (Cryptosporidium, Polio, Campylobacter, Rotavirus), and the development of novel therapeutics for enteric protozoa, as well as the work of the UVM Vaccine Testing Center and the COBRE-TGIR. The VTC has studied vaccines and vaccine immunology for twenty years, including a focus on flavivirus (Dengue, Zika, West Nile), enteric vaccines, and most recently SARS-CoV-2. Additional division research includes Infection Prevention, Antibiotic Stewardship and Quality initiatives. Our division also provides leadership in medical student and resident education, infection prevention, pandemic preparedness, and antibiotic stewardship.
