Schedule Information: Initial field training will be day, evening, and midnight shifts. Once successful field training is completed, you will be assigned primarily to the midnight shift (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM). Due to staffing needs the possibility of working other shifts (days 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, and afternoons 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM) does exist.  

Hours Per Week: 40 hours Includes weekends, holidays. Shift Differential pay and overtime pay may apply.

General Function: Community Service Officer duties include becoming proficient at communications/dispatching and patrol of a public safety nature as representatives of the Harper College Police Department (HCPD). United in the spirit of teamwork, the Harper College Police Department is committed to providing the highest quality of police services to the people who learn, work, visit and teach at the Harper’s campuses.

Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police, the Community Service Officer assists College personnel, and visitors, and enforces College rules and regulations, works in tandem with the Police Officers when called upon, provides service and protection to the people and property of Harper College, and is proactive in providing a safe environment for employees, students, and the public.

Duties of Position: While acting as a dispatcher you are responsible for the safety of the members of the HCPD who conduct field operations and act as a resource for the institution. Additionally, they serve as a resource via radio and telephone to all other divisions of the College. Patrol functions include the opening and closing of facilities as requests, conducting crime prevention checks of college assets, enforce parking regulations, and resolving various issue that do not require the services of a Police Officer.

In accomplishing these important tasks, the CSO may:

Use various institutional and government databases for information relating to police services and investigations, student information and divisional requests.

Issue College keys to authorized employees, vendors, contractors or emergency personnel.

Maintain parking regulations by issuing permits, verifying information, issuing parking citations, and processing citation payment.

Provide assistance to walk-in traffic for information, directions, complaint resolution, parking ticket appeals, and other information general in nature.

Perform escorts, vehicle jumpstarts, vehicle lockouts and traffic direction.

Maintain computer and security systems functionality, lost and found property, departmental forms and supplies.

Dispatch appropriate personnel to alarms and assist HCPD officers as directed.

Intake and disposal of lost & found items.

Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Be at least twenty years of age

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Valid driver's license.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  4. Ability to patrol on foot at all facilities.
  5. Ability to pass a thorough background investigation.
  6. Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  7. Medical exam and drug testing
Desired Qualifications:
  • Law enforcement, dispatch, or security experience.
  • Associate degree or higher.

Required on the job training:

Successfully complete of the HCPD training program within four months of employment.

Successfully complete the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) LEADS – FULL ACCESS course within four months of employment.

Successfully complete training in use of the College’s indices to inquire upon student records within four months of employment.

Successfully complete First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certification within 6 months of employment.

Successfully complete Hazardous Materials-First Responder training within 6 months of employment.

Annual proficiency requirements:

Shall maintain certification in LEADS – FULL ACCESS

Shall maintain certification in AED, CPR and First Aid
