Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.7 million square feet of facilities and is home to 8,500+ students. The department employs nearly 200 full-time staff members, 20 graduate assistants and 500 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources. In support of its mission to provide comfortable, affordable and secure housing options where the academic success and personal growth of residents are encouraged and supported, University Housing engages staff members in competency-based training and students in curriculum-based engagement focused on community building, interpersonal skills, social awareness and responsibility, and well-being.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Position Summary:

The primary function of this journeyman level position is repair, installation and maintenance of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating units in the residence halls. This position supports 9 residential communities accommodating approximately 8,000 residents.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

1.Knowledge and skills in the use of tools, equipment and practices used in the HVAC/Refrigeration trade.
2.Knowledge of heating and cooling systems for area of responsibility and ability to make repairs.
3.Ability to do inspection of all aspects of residential buildings, climbing ladders, crawling in utility tunnels, attics, pipe chases and mechanical areas.
4.Ability to troubleshoot and repair projects and work orders associated with HVAC/Refrigeration trade.
5.Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with staff, residents and various customer groups and demonstrates supportive involvement in work environment.
6.Ability to work as a team member, but also make effective independent decisions and follow through on assignments.
7.Ability to efficiently utilize a variety of computer applications in the completion of assigned tasks, including but not limited to the work order system, Microsoft Office Suite, UGA email and employee websites.

Physical Demands:

1.Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds, work from a ladder or scaffold.
2.Bend at the waist and knees.
3.Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
4.Use hand tools and power tools.
5.Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
6.Crawl to complete various tasks.
7.Perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather.
8.Safely operate a UGA state vehicle.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Responds to written and verbal, as well as computerized work order requests in a timely manner. Will use and manipulate the web based work order system to document the following:
-Installs, repairs, maintains and service refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and related equipment within the residence halls, including but not limited to exterior locations no higher than 20 feet.
-Overhauls and service refrigeration, air conditioning, heating units by repairing, replacing and adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, water and vacuum pumps.
-Tests refrigeration equipment for leaks; repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings.
-Removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats.
-Adjusts pressure solenoid and expansion valves.
-Add gas to refrigeration unit, weighing carefully. Recording amounts and types of refrigerant required by EPA.
-Performs inspections related to preventive maintenance and schedule filter changes.
