Job Summary

Johnson County Community College is looking to fill a full-time faculty position in Foreign Languages to teach Japanese language courses. JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. The Kansas City Metro is known for its museums, restaurants, and music and art scenes. JCCC is similarly dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum and center for the performing arts located on campus.
JCCC is looking for a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Foreign Language Department to teach Elementary, Intermediate and Conversational Japanese courses. The Foreign Language Department offers courses in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish and is part of the Communications Division. Many of our students are non-traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international and first-generation college students. JCCC has a diverse student population and is dedicated to increasing its diversity.
The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in Japanese. This person will perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours; developing and revising curriculum; developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in department, division and college meetings; serving on committees; participating in any Japanese related initiatives at JCCC; collaborating with and observing adjunct faculty teaching Japanese and other languages; collaborating and working successfully with other full-time faculty in the Foreign Language department; and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be any combination of face-to-face day or evening courses, hybrid or online and are subject to change as needed.

Work hours Monday-Friday 8-5 and evening hours as needed to teach night classes and other departmental duties.
Additional responsibilities:
• Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for Japanese language students.
• Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives.
• Participate in on-campus events promoting languages.

Required Qualifications

M.A. in Japanese or an M.A. in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Japanese as required by JCCC HLC (Higher Learning Commission) criteria.
Teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or high school teaching experience.
Ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level Japanese language courses.
Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills provided by supervisor and colleagues’ letters of reference.
Demonstrated 2 years past teaching experience at the post-secondary level and/or high school teaching experience.
Demonstrated ability to teach Elementary and Intermediate level Japanese language courses.

Preferred Qualifications

More than 2 years teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
Taught Elementary, Intermediate and Conversation level Japanese courses.
Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in the classroom
Demonstrated understanding of the climate of post-secondary institutions
Demonstrated knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages
Ability to teach Chinese, French, German, or Spanish with HLC credentials
Ph.D. in Japanese, East Asian Languages or Cultures, or Linguistics with a focus on the Japanese language

With more than 34,000 students enrolled in credit and continuing education classes each semester, Johnson County Community College is the state's third largest institution of higher education and the largest of its 19 community colleges.

JCCC offers a full range of undergraduate credit courses that form the first two years of most college curricula. The college has more than 100 transfer agreements with area colleges and universities that ensure admittance to specific programs such as business, engineering and education. JCCC students are able to begin their first two years of a four-year degree program here and complete that degree on schedule.

In addition, more than 50 one- and two-year career and certificate programs prepare students to enter the job market in high-employment fields. The college maintains extensive student support services such as computer labs, math labs, a writing center and a learning center.

JCCC’s continuing education program is the largest, most comprehensive in the Kansas City area. Through the Center for Business and Technology, participants can take courses in management and computer application or seminars and workshops that lead to professional certification and licensure. Personal enrichment classes, on topics ranging from gardening to money management, are also offered, while nationally and internationally performing and visual artists appear in the performance spaces and Gallery of Art in JCCC’s Carlsen Center.

The campus, centrally located in the county on 234 acres, opened in 1972. There are 18 major buildings on campus. Currently under construction are the Regnier Center and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

JCCC’s full-time faculty and staff numbers about 875. Another 1,800 people work as adjunct faculty or part-time staff. Most faculty members have master’s degrees, and many have or are earning doctorates.

JCCC returns about $2.70 to the community for every tax dollar it collects. The college's total tangible economic impact on the community is more than $182 million annually.
