Applications are invited for the position of Surgeon-in-Chief / Head, Sprott Department of Surgery, Program Medical Director, Surgery and Critical Care at the University Health Network. This is a full-time clinical academic appointment and the successful candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate / Full Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. The qualified applicant will have eligibility to hold the James Wallace McCutcheon Chair in Surgery for the Surgeon-in-Chief at the Sprott Department of Surgery, University Health Network and the University of Toronto which is associated with this leadership position. The anticipated start date is early to mid 2022, or as mutually agreed upon, for a five-year term, renewable once upon successful review.

The Surgeon-in-Chief / Head, Sprott Department of Surgery, Program Medical Director, Surgery and Critical Care will be responsible for clinical and academic activities within the Department and will ensure the highest quality in patient care services. The successful candidate will ensure the growth of the departmental research and education programs and will foster collaborations with external partners. They will be responsible for developing and implementing a vision and strategic plan for the department in alignment with that of UHN and the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. They will develop and support new innovations that provide evidence based care and new knowledge in complex care across the system.

The Department seeks an outstanding academic with demonstrated leadership and management skills and experience with a commitment to excellence in clinical care, quality improvement, education, innovation, and research while fostering a professional culture of inclusion and integrity. While this role is based at the University Health Network, this individual will foster partnerships and collaboration with other departments at UHN, other University of Toronto affiliated hospitals and other elements of the health care system. The successful candidate will have a personal record of excellence in academic accomplishment and leadership in research and education. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in inter-professional collaboration with other health care disciplines.

Qualifications include an MD degree, eligibility for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

University Health Network is Canada’s leading Academic Health Sciences Center, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Located in downtown Toronto, University Health Network has four clinical sites – Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, as well as its own integrated Health Sciences School – the Michener Institute of Education at UHN and seven Research Institutes. UHN has extensive primary and community care services and provides secondary through quaternary care for Toronto, southern Ontario and beyond. University Health Network hosts annually approximately 1,183,968 ambulatory visits, and cares for over 42,260 inpatients in more than 1250 beds.

The Sprott Department of Surgery at the University Health Network has approximately 130 Active Staff Physicians across 13 divisions in various academic roles of Surgeon-Scientist, Surgeon-Investigator, Surgeon-Teacher and Surgeon-Administrator. The Surgeon-in-Chief at UHN reports dually to UHN leadership and the University Department of Surgery Chair.

The Sprott Department of Surgery provides high quality inpatient and ambulatory clinical care at three sites, with 35,000 operations performed annually and collaborates closely with all physicians who are part of the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Surgery. Surgery at the University Health Network is a research-intensive department supported by over $7 million in total research funding from extramural funding sources. Members of Sprott Surgery hold approximately 40 Chairs/Professorships. The department has a long tradition of excellence in education and undergraduate medicine teaching, as well as comprehensive postgraduate teaching with over 520 Residents/Fellows, at present.
