Detailed Description:
Provides comprehensive leadership and management for the Career Development Center. Works collaboratively across the university to ensurethat career development and employability programs are aligned with USD's mission and strategic directions. Exercises strong leadership, communication, research, and analytical skills in directing administrative, staffing, programmatic, budgetary, assessment, and outreachefforts. Represents the Center and its interests with all constituents, including senior administration, trustees, employers' partners, and alumni. Oversees strategic integrated program teams: including Employer Relations; Career Communities; Assessment and Planning; Marketing, Events, & Communications; and Alumni Engagement for the purposes of career development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration, Staff Management, Policy Planning, and Budget:
  • Oversees all aspects of the office of Career Development Center, which serves USD undergraduates, graduate students and alumni. Sets priorities for office functions and oversees strategic planning. Researches, analyzes and makes decisions regarding policy planning and development. Directs employer relations, on-campus recruiting activities and the work of the Employer Relations Team. Oversees major annual career events and office presentation schedule. Leads the creation and editing of office documents, website content, and descriptions of Career Development Center in university publications to ensure consistency and accuracy working closely with the Marketing Specialist and Technology Specialist and engaging with the USD Marketing and Communications team. Prepares, conducts and analyzes annual Career Destinations survey of undergraduate outcomes and data collection for university reports. Develops an assessment strategy to evaluate the success of Career Center services and programs and to gauge the learning outcomes of students utilizing the Center.
  • Articulates outcomes to internal and external constituents in conjunction with office of Institutional Research and Planning. Collaborates closely with Admissions in providing data of student success, assisting in the narrative of success that USD students achieve. Oversees strategies for a strong virtual presence for students and employers, leveraging technology and other resources to expand USD's reach in the global marketplace.
  • Prepares annual budget requests for consideration by university budget committee. Oversees center budget and approves all expenditures. Tracks budgetary items and aligns spending with office and university mission. Coordinates office equipment upgrades according to university policy.
  • Supervises a team of professionals in fulfillment of office and university mission. Leads efforts to define goals and objectives with staff members. Guides staff development and involvement in professional associations.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws/guidelines. Ensures business practices and services meet professional standards.
  • Continually tracks trends in the employment sphere, adapting career development support and employer outreach to reflect the professional goals of students as well as the shifts of employers.

    Employer, Faculty and Professional Partnership Development:
  • Promotes and maintains relationships with employers and graduate school representatives to strengthen and expand career, internship, and graduate/professional school opportunities for students and alumni. Fosters alumni involvement in the career development of USD students and alumni. Collaborates with faculty, staff and administrators throughout campus to position Career Development Center as a comprehensive career resource. Represents Career Development Center at campus-wide events and on committees. Leads and supports projects that promote USD Career Development Center on campus and within the community. Working closely with Student Affairs groups, engages students in mentorship and experiential opportunities. Represents the office and the university in national and regional professional associations and with accrediting bodies. The Senior Director works closely with Deans in the Schools to create goals as they pertain to successful career outcomes for all majors. The Senior Director cultivates, maintains, and enhances a vast network of employer relationships leading to internship and entry level opportunities for liberal arts trained students and graduates.
  • Provides ongoing updates to the Board of Trustees and the Executive Leadership team about the success of students in achieving postgraduate career goals. Oversees the Employer Advisory Board, creating broader opportunities across all industries for USD students.
  • Promotes USD and its reputation through participation on committees in national professional organizations, membership in local professional organizations, speaking opportunities where the innovative approach to career readiness is shared with employers and peer universities.

    Career Counseling and Presentations
  • Provides professional career advising to individuals and groups. Professional advising is comprehensive in scope (i.e., knowledge of advising topics that range from intake and assessment to an understanding of career fields and relevant trends in these fields) and responsible in approach (i.e., client respect and confidentiality of issues discussed in session). Professional advising also provides students and alumni with support in professional development (e.g., skills building, information processing, decision making and problem solving) that contributes to meaningful and rewarding careers. Works with the team to create relevant and scalable programming that reaches all students.
  • Provides innovative and collaborative leadership to engage students in the multiple approaches to identifying and pursuing their chosen careers. Supports actively the unique challenges of students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation and international students.
  • Leads outreach efforts to students, parents, and on-campus organizations. Coordinates co-sponsored career events, classroom visits and activities with student organizations, faculty and administrative units.

    Job Requirements:
    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's or doctoral degree in counseling, education, leadership or related area.
  • Five to seven years of related experience, preferably in a university career center management position.
  • Administrative, organizational and management skills.
  • Ability to work with community partners on and off campus.
  • Ability to manage professional and clerical staff.
  • Ability to develop relationships with alumni to further goals of career center.
  • Ability to build and develop strong working relationships with faculty, staff and upper level administrators in university setting.
  • Ability to provide individualized career advising.
  • Ability to set up and facilitate group sessions.
  • Oral presentation, writing and MS Office software skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on team projects with diverse individuals.
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm for representing Career Services at major institutional events.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clients to solve problems, dealing with direct conflict in an objective and professional manner.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion practices.
