ALEX Advisor

Location:
Clinton, NY
Open Date:
Jan 12, 2022
Description:

Hamilton College seeks two motivated professional advisors to join a creative and dynamic team implementing the ALEX initiative (Advise, Learn, Experience). ALEX supports the College’s mission by encouraging students to participate in their communities, adapt to change, and skillfully discern, articulate, and pursue their purpose.

ALEX advisors, in conjunction with faculty academic advisors and a network of support services, guide students as they navigate through college. Using a holistic and developmental approach, advisors build mentoring relationships with students and connect them with resources as they explore values, skills, and opportunities, set and pursue goals, make informed decisions, integrate their curricular and co-curricular learning, and reflect on their growth. Once the program is fully implemented, each full-time ALEX advisor will have a cohort of approximately 250 students.

ALEX advisors must be empathetic, organized, collaborative, positive, excellent listeners and communicators, and committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion; must understand college student development and integrative learning; must value reflection; and must be excited to help implement something new!

ALEX advisors are responsible for:

  • Meeting regularly with students in their cohorts (individually, in groups, and through workshops and other events): helping students to explore values, skills, and opportunities; create and revise success plans; identify their needs and connect to resources; and integrate and reflect on their learning.
  • Tracking and documenting the status of student success plans in the student advising software system.
  • Communicating and collaborating with campus partners, including but not limited to faculty academic advisors, first-year course instructors, peer mentors, and staff in experiential learning, academic support, career development, wellness, accessibility, and residence life.
  • Reading student reflections on their learning.
  • Participating in student learning and program assessment activities.
  • Participating in staff meetings, training, professional development, and relevant committees.
  • Participating in building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable campus community.

Preferred start date is July 2022.

Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree plus two years’ experience preferred, in areas such as counseling/psychology, college student development, educational equity and diversity, global education, higher education advising, higher education pedagogy (scholarship of teaching and learning), or related fields.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of traditional-age college students is required; experience with student support software (Starfish, etc.) is a plus.
  • Equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience will be considered.

Application Instructions:

Please submit cover letter, resume and contact information for three professional references. Consideration of candidates will begin March 11 and continue until each position is filled.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:

Organization

Working at Hamilton College

Hamilton College is one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges. It is independent, highly selective, coeducational and residential. Originally founded in 1793 as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy and chartered in 1812 as the third oldest college in New York State, Hamilton is today composed of 1,850 students from nearly all 50 states and 50 countries. It is distinguished by a faculty of 190 men and women dedicated to teaching and scholarship, by rigorous academic programs, by an emphasis on teaching students to write well and speak persuasively, and by a commitment to diversity in its broadest sense. The College, with an endowment nearing $1 billion (October 2017), is need-blind in admission and has invested more than $265 million in new and renovated facilities in the past dozen years.

Hamilton is located on a wooded 1,350-acre hilltop campus overlooking the New England-style Village of Clinton, New York, in close proximity to the Adirondack Park, where hiking, skiing, fishing, boating and snowmobiling abound. The campus is within a 4-5 hour drive of New York, Boston, Toronto and Philadelphia, and there is a rich variety of cultural opportunities on campus and in nearby Utica (10 minutes), Syracuse (45 minutes) and Cooperstown (55 minutes).

As a national leader for teaching students to write effectively, learn from each other and think for themselves, Hamilton produces graduates who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make their voices heard on issues of importance to their communities and the world.
