Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Fellow will receive advanced training and supervision in sport psychology, with a heavy emphasis on individual psychotherapy for athletes who experience a variety of mental health concerns that may impact emotional, psychological, personal, athletic, social, and/or academic functioning. There will also be opportunities for the Postdoctoral Fellow to provide individual and group mental performance consultation to UMass student-athletes and teams, as well as outreach, workshops, and coach consultation when available. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to complete ~20-25 direct client contact hours per week. The other ~15-20 hours will be allotted for notes, admin, supervision, case management, and prep time. The Fellow may also have opportunities to participate in training seminars through the UMass Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH) with other counseling center Postdoctoral Fellows. Clinical case supervision is provided for psychotherapy by a licensed psychologist. The Fellow will also participate in weekly staff and clinical meetings. May perform other duties as formulated by the director.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts psychological assessments for ADHD and Learning Disabilities, including administration, and scoring of various assessment instruments, interpreting test results, and writing integrated assessment reports.
  • Presents assessment results to clients and discusses recommendations.
  • Provides psychotherapy to student-athletes.
  • Develops client case load.
  • Makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Documents client contacts and maintains client records.
  • Attends weekly supervision with clinical case supervisor.
  • Attends weekly supervision and receives didactic training with assessment supervisor.
  • May be involved with consultation and education/outreach activities.
  • May provide psychotherapy groups and/or psychoeducational workshops, which may be some evenings.
  • Consults with external referral sources and with campus referral sources around treatment planning and referrals as appropriate.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    Candidates must have completed a doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology and must have completed a pre-doctoral psychology internship; demonstrated competence in the study and/or practice of sport psychology through either specialized coursework, master’s or doctoral level practicum or internship experience with athletes, research, or professional experience. This position also requires knowledge of current counseling and psychotherapy models (empirically supported treatments), a commitment to promoting diversity and developing multicultural competence, demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population, knowledge of developmental issues of college students, and the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty and professional staff.

    Varied schedule based on the demands of the position. Nights, weekends and holidays may be required.

    Salary Information

    The twelve-month fellowship provides a salary of $41,200 plus benefits. One year position 8/21/22-8/19/23. The Fellow will be provided with office space within the Department of Athletics.
