The Department of Neurology has an opening for a full-time Laboratory Sciences Professional to work in the laboratory of Kenneth Tyler, M.D. (Department Chair). The lab is funded by grants from the National Institute of Health and the Veteran’s Administration and investigates viral infections of the Central Nervous System. Typical experiments will involve the maintenance of tissue culture cells, virus propagation, construction and expression of recombinant plasmid clones, gel electrophoresis, Western Blots, RTPCR, ELISAs, and immunofluorescence microscopy. Current projects in the lab involve identifying mechanisms of virus-induced cell death, host immune responses, and the evaluation of potential treatments for West Nile Virus and Enterovirus D-68 infections. We are seeking an individual who is collaborative, communicative, detail-oriented, organized, proactive, able to think critically, focused on quality, dedicated to personal growth, and highly motivated.

Professionals at the entry level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability, and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability, and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit, and related issues
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • A large amount of mouse work is required, and the incoming PRA will perform injections, monitor disease progression, and harvest tissues from neonatal and adult mice.
  • The position will be expected to work independently under the supervisor of the PI but will also engage, communicate, and collaborate with various colleagues (e.g., principal investigator, neurology research staff, finance and billing professionals, and regulatory team). The PRA is responsible for providing a high level of professionalism to both internal and external constituents that will maintain the positive image of the department and University
  • Managing accurate and timely documentation of all research activities and correspondences with collaborators (e.g., chain of custody lab samples, progress reports) that adhere to department, University and federal policies and protocols.
  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions
  • Independently Review, develop, and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

Entry-Level: $35,600 to $45,283

Intermediate-Level: $36,000 to $45,792  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.     Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, or equivalent disciplineA combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
