The Division of Pulmonary Sciences has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Entry/Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional position.

The University of Colorado Denver seeks an outgoing and motivated full-time Research Services Entry or Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional to work in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. Dr. Tennis’ lab focuses on the investigation of early lung cancer development and lung cancer chemoprevention using translational research approaches. Projects include work with in vitro models, in vivo models, and human samples and interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists and clinicians. The preferred candidate will have molecular and cellular biology research experience, general knowledge of cancer research, and enjoy supporting a team science environment. This position is in a small lab, where PRAs interact directly and often with the PI, have frequent opportunities to work with collaborators, have a high potential for authorship and presentations, and are supported in career development for future goals.

The preferred candidate will have biomedical research experience, strong self-motivation, willingness to contribute to team science, attention to detail, strong record keeping skills, an outgoing and professional demeanor, excellent oral and written communication skills, and a desire to contribute to the advancement of lung cancer science. Candidates should be comfortable working autonomously and from home when public health restrictions are in place.

Research Services Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional

Professionals at the entry level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability, and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity.

Research Services Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability, and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying, and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

At the intermediate level, duties are less limited in scope and are performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals.

Nature of Work

Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.  Dr. Meredith Tennis’ lab focuses on the investigation of early lung cancer development and lung cancer chemoprevention using translational research approaches. Projects include work with in vitro models, in vivo models, and human samples and interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists and clinicians. The preferred candidate will have molecular and cellular biology research experience, general knowledge of cancer research, and enjoy supporting a team science environment. This position is in a small lab, where PRAs interact directly and often with the PI, have frequent opportunities to work with collaborators, have a high potential for authorship and presentations, and are supported in career development for future goals.

Examples of Duties Performed

    Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.  Meet weekly with immediate lab group to review research design and progress.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects, including nucleic acid isolation from mouse and human tissues, cell culture and harvesting, western blotting, polymerase chain reactions, histologic processing and staining, transfection and transduction, plasmid prep, luciferase, and cell phenotype assays.
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research using MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and statistical software.Maintain detailed records of laboratory experiments.Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results.Prepare lab for daily operations, including ordering and stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary.Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed.Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and informationProvide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve technical or administrative issues.Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions.Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs.Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.
  • Independently performs scientific literature searches and attends scientific seminars.
  • Contributes to manuscript preparation and grant applications.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned and trains new laboratory personnel when needed.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for the Research Services Entry Laboratory Sciences Professional has been established at $35,600 to $45,283.

The salary range (or hiring range) for the Research Services Intermediate Laboratory Sciences Professional has been established at $36,000 to $45,792.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
