Job Summary/Responsibilities:The General Assignment reporter is responsible for regularly covering news, features and sports stories as assigned by the Editor-In-Chief or Managing Editor.
This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. The employee may be asked to perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of Spinnaker. Employees must meet the responsibilities and qualifications of the position consistent with a minimum of 10 hours of competent effort each week. The General Assignment reporter will:
- Cover a beat and follow up on future story leads as assigned.
- Complete at least two publishable, compelling, timely multimedia stories/photo galleries/video clips per week
- Go over each assignment with the editor, including sources and records that should be secured; follow-up with the editor after crucial reporting is done to give the story in a sentence; edit the first draft with an editor; produce subsequent drafts as needed.
- Make a deadline and communicate to editors any changes or updates to a story
- Review submitted articles with an editor to ensure that all guidelines regarding libel/slander, factual accuracy, fairness, deadlines, privacy, and plagiarism are followed
- Learn/use basics of reporting, writing, editing, photography, videography, audio production
- Contribute story ideas to the editor
- Attend required staff meetings
- Complete basic news training classes when needed
- Build and post office hours within the first week of the semester
This position requires a strong understanding of the foundational principles of journalism and storytelling, a firm understanding of the legal/ethical issues of newsgathering, and good interpersonal and communication skills.
Must be continuously enrolled at UNF for the duration of the position and not be on academic probation or suspension as defined by the most recent University of North Florida course catalog.
Completed course work in communication ethics, communication law, and advanced journalism is helpful but not required for the position.
