About the College/Unit/Department:

The University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research institution located on a 700 acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute’s primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow’s scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University’s Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy.

Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the R/V Savannah. The R/V Savannah is operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet.

Position Summary:

This position is a skilled tradesman Machinist/Welder to perform machine shop work with considerable knowledge in the fabrication of research equipment. The position is responsible for the construction, assembly, and installation of a wide variety of research tools and equipment requiring a high degree of precision tolerances. Work is subject to close inspection for quality and conformance with user requirements. Assignments are received both orally and in the form of rough sketches and drawings.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Strong customer service skills.

Ability to work independently with little supervision.

High school diploma or GED and one to three years similar experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Considerable experience in one or more of the applicable trades (i.e.: welding, machinist); or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

AutoCAD experience (preferred).

Ability to work independently, conceptualize project and manage multiple priorities.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Considerable knowledge of the properties of metal and alloys, as well as the working properties and heat treatment of a wide variety of metals and plastics.

Skill in the use and care of welding tools and equipment.

Skill in performing intricate welds and brazing of minute parts.

Ability to design and fabricate special components and instruments for research.

Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the machinist trade.

Ability to do high precision work with hand and/or machine tools.

Ability to use shop mathematic, charts, tables, and handbook formulae.

Ability to read and analyze building blueprints, diagrams, and specifications.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the machinist trade.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to understand and interpret information.

Ability to multitask and coordinate multiple projects.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, staff, supervisors and customers.

Physical Demands:

Stand, stoop, climb, bend, stretch and walk as needed to successfully perform machinist/welding duties.
Lift, hold and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis.

Installs, repairs, and fabricates a wide variety of complex research tools, equipment, parts, and fixtures.

Makes metal parts and prepares the parts for welding repairs instrument parts.

Performs difficult and precise machine operations.

Maintains and repairs welding shop equipment; keeps up shop supplies; repairs specialized laboratory equipment.
