Position Overview:

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) Administrator in the Pace University Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) supports the research community, IRB members, and Co-Chairs in fulfilling their responsibilities for the protection of human subjects. In working closely with the Director-level HRPP staff, the IRB administrator is provided with appropriate training and education to fulfill their responsibilities. This position offers remote working.

Position Duties:

  • Manage communications with investigators. The IRB administrator is available to any member of the Pace research community to discuss human subjects protection issues.
  • Support the IRB members and the two (equal) IRB Co-chairs in fulfilling their responsibilities for ensuring that the rights and welfare of research subjects are protected by reviewing and approving human research in a manner consistent with Federal regulations, state and local laws, and Pace University guidelines and policies.
  • Assist the IRB Co-chairs in the operation of the HRPP Advisory Committee. This committee, which is chaired by the IRB Co-Chairs and includes the Director-level HRPP staff, faculty who are representative of the disciplines of Pace University investigators and of the Faculty Council, and legal counsel to the IRB provides advice to the Institutional Official on the conduct of the HRPP, including reviewing and making recommendations on significant changes to policies and procedures.
  • Process IRB submissions, including completing pre-review, performing administrative review, and assigning reviewers for exempt, expedited, and full board submissions. When a submission is made to the IRB, the general review procedures include evaluation of whether all study personnel has fulfilled their training requirements and whether the submission is complete and internally consistent. The IRB administrator also checks whether a Principal Investigator (PI) or Faculty Advisor on a new submission has any studies that have expired or passed their check-in due date. The IRB administrator notifies the PI of any needed clarifications or corrections.
  • Communicate with IRB members regarding their assigned expedited reviews or other assigned submissions.
  • Manage IRB meetings, including developing agendas, distributing meeting materials, tracking attendance and quorum, following up on required actions, and preparing minutes. The IRB administrator routinely attends IRB meetings.
  • Updating and maintaining the roster of IRB members and maintaining the electronic system and IRB records.

Required Position Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S., with at least three years of human subjects research-related experience.
  • Experience conducting and managing human subject research in an academic research environment.
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations pertaining to human subject research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to make accurate and appropriate independent judgments, including when to escalate issues, and able to accept direct supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a positive and effective manner with faculty, staff, and institutional representatives.
  • Solid computer skills and strong competency in Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years IRB-related experience with Exempt and Expedited IRB reviews of Social-Behavioral and Educational human subjects research.
  • Experience with electronic research administration systems.
  • CIP certification.
