The Art and Design Program at Portland Community College is seeking a full-time instructor in Art with an emphasis in Ceramics at the Rock Creek campus. The Art and Design Program comprises eight (8) departments/areas of study:

●Architecture

●Art

●Graphic Design

●Interior Design

●Music

●Music and Sonic Arts

●Multimedia

●Theater Arts

The departments often work in collaboration to help enhance our students’ college learning experience. Our students in the Art program use a broad range of materials, techniques and projects to explore design concepts with reference to historical and contemporary perspectives. The Portland Community College Art program provides quality education in an atmosphere that encourages one to fully realize their artistic potential. Studio and art history classes play a vital role in a general liberal arts education as well encouraging a broader critical analysis and social awareness of the world. The PCC Art faculty are a committed group of educators, working artists and art historians, active in personal, professional, and community development.

Art studio classes are limited to 24 students. The average enrollment in art history classes is about 35 students. Comparable classes at other institutions can number into the hundreds.This position requires knowledge of all aspects of ceramic production including but not limited to wheel throwing, hand building, kiln firing, glaze formulation, mold-making, and surface manipulation. Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of historical and contemporary ceramics practice and theory. The ceramics program at the Rock Creek campus maintains the following equipment

●Kilns:

○Gas-Reduction c6, Soda c6, Raku

○Electric-Oxidation c6 and bisque c06

■All finished work is fired to Cone 6 (except Raku)

●Wheels:

○Electric – Brent, Skutt, Shimpo

○Electrified kick wheels - Lockerbie

●Slab rollers

●Extruders

  • Academic and/or professional background necessary to teach at least the following Art studio courses: ART253A Ceramics I, ART254 Hand Building, ART255 Wheel Throwing, and 256A Ceramics II
  • Responds to cultural shifts and changing community support needs through ongoing interrogation of pedagogy and teaching practices
  • Adapts practices to include a wide range of cultural knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, especially from historically untapped communities
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with a diverse academic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community College students, staff, and community
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collegially, creatively and collaboratively at the department/program/campus/college levels
  • Ability to work collaboratively with studio technicians to maintain all aspects of the Ceramics studio
  • Basic knowledge of kiln design, repair and firing
  • Basic knowledge of glaze formulation and composition
  • Appliesinstructional expertise and a deep understanding of Culturally Responsive Education theory and praxis to improve the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

Studio Art Courses

    Master of Fine Arts in Visual or Studio Art is required
Exceptions include the following:

A vacancy opens unexpectedly immediately before or during the term. A temporary replacement may then be hired to complete the term or academic year. The temporary replacement must have a combination of education and experience to adequately cover the course material as recommended by the Art Department Chair and approved by the Division Dean and Dean of Instruction.

An opportunity exists to enhance the educational experience of students by offering a unique course or courses taught by an artist with specialized expertise and a regional, national, or international reputation. This individual may teach one term per year.

An individual with expertise and education may teach in an area where an MFA is not an option, e.g. Calligraphy.Degree must be from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic and/or professional background necessary to teach at least one of the following Art studio courses: : Art 131/231Drawing I/II,, ART290A Sculpture: Plaster Clay, ART117 3D Design, ART115 2D Design B&W,, ART257 Ceramics-Mold Making.

Starting Salary ExpectationsInitial Salary Placement will be up to Step 3 ($62,665) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.Position Grade Salary Range$58780 to $99564 Annual SalaryFTE1PCC BenefitsPCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. Includes Health, Dental, and Vision options, Group Life, Long-term Disability, Long-term Care, and Auto and Home Insurance programs.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:

  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year
  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
