Position Summary:
The Summer Undergraduate Internship in Nonproliferation Studies at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (MIIS) is a paid internship. Interns will be compensated at the same rate as graduate research assistants.

*For the Summer 2022, given the still uncertain situation due to the ongoing global pandemic, there is a possibility that the program may be conducted remotely. We will make our decision in alignment with MIIS policy which continues to follow the guidance of state and country health authorities.

Intern(s) will work with CNS experts on substantive nonproliferation issues in areas such as those below:
  • Eurasia Nonproliferation
  • East Asia Nonproliferation
  • Chemical and Biological Weapons Nonproliferation
  • International Organizations and Nonproliferation
  • Export control and Nonproliferation
  • Middle East nonproliferation



CNS's research interests also cover open source tools for nonproliferation, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Terrorism and regional nonproliferation issues.

In addition to assigned research work, interns may develop their own research projects under the guidance of CNS experts. Interns may also have an opportunity to present results of their independent research as appropriate during the program. As part of the training aspects of the internship program, interns attend seminars and lectures held at CNS throughout the summer. The duration of the internship should be two to three months between early June and end of August.

Essential Functions:
• Conduct research in the field of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction
• Assist CNS’s ongoing research and educational activities

General Responsibilities:
Other duties as assigned.

Education:
It is preferred that at the time of acceptance, applicants for these internships should at least be in their sophomore year of studies at an undergraduate institution and be eligible to work in the United States.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of international security topics and command of a foreign language are desirable. Students majoring in the physical or biological sciences are also encouraged to apply.

Experience:
Applicants should have a strong interest in nonproliferation and international security issues.

Physical Demands:
The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey maintains a smoke-free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act. Essential job functions require ability to sit for extended periods of time, walk, bend, climb, push/pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally. Also requires fine dexterity and ability to grasp, i.e. for writing and word processing/data entry.
