Veterinary Technician, After-Hours Surgery

The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Veterinary Technician.  The primary purpose of this position to have a veterinary technician/nurse to provide after-hours care for hospitalized surgery patients who are not in the ICU. The after-hours surgery technician is cross-trained with all veterinary nursing staff in the small animal surgery section. This includes providing nursing care within the Surgery section by facilitating after hours treatments, procedures, making patient assessments, performing triage.  Position collects and submits diagnostic samples, records patients' medical histories and symptoms, including observations. Position supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents. Incumbent serves as a resource of information and guidance.

Depending on qualifications of the successful candidate, position will begin as a Veterinary Technician II, Senior Veterinary Technician I, or Senior Veterinary Technician II.  More responsibilities will be expected of those hired in at a more advanced level.

Typical Responsibilities:

    Provides nursing care to surgery cases for soft tissue and orthopedics services.Administers medications and treatments and ensures patients are provided excellent care in the evenings.Obtains samples for diagnostic testing, ordering lab tests and diagnostic procedures for emergency after-hours cases.Prepares surgical equipment for use.Prepares patients for surgery using aseptic technique. Heavily sedates/anesthetizes patients for procedures when needed.Monitors patient's status during procedures until fully recovered.Evaluates/monitors patients for swelling, pain, or anxiety post-operatively.Provides client with discharge instructions for continued patient care once they leave the hospital.Enters charges on patient accounts.Circulates in the operating room and provides assistance to the surgeons/residents when needed for late afternoon and evening surgical cases.Communicates with clients whose pets have been discharged to answer follow-up questions or to check on status of the patient.Facilitates call-backs to inquiry calls from day shift.Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents in the application of proper techniques, including aseptic technique, anesthesia, patient monitoring, follow-up care, etc. Is available to coordinate emergency cases that call in for referral and estimates. Prepares surgical equipment the following day's use.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

6 months of experience in a veterinary medical center or one year in a private veterinary practice. Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Technology.  Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program in Veterinary Technology.  Must have a Veterinary Technician license and must obtain a Tennessee license within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Senior Veterinary Technician I: Three years of experience in a veterinary medical center or five years in private veterinary practice.

Senior Veterinary Technician II:  Six years of experience in a veterinary medical center or seven years in private veterinary practice.

 

1 year of experience in surgery practice.
