Under the general supervision of the Dean of Science, Engineering, Computer Science and Math Transfer and Career Pathways (TrAC), the Adjunct Associate Professor of Geography teaches organized classes primarily in the Geography discipline(s); the primary responsibility is to teach up to 10 units (part-time) in the assigned discipline. The successful candidate will provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, and academic diversity within community college populations; the candidate will also show knowledge and understanding of how these factors relate to the need for equity-minded and culturally responsive practices in the community college setting.

  1. Instruct courses in Geography in accordance with credit course outlines approved by the Board of Trustees.
  2. Maintain expertise in current teaching methods, discipline knowledge, and discipline specific technologies.
  3. Assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling services and/or tutorial assistance. Track student learning outcomes and maintain records of student learning outcomes.
  4. Support the TrAC Dean in cooperating with campus and community groups to provide programs, courses, and information relevant to the needs of the students and various programs.
  5. Complete various reporting procedures as required for student evaluation, course reporting.
  6. Attend various departmental, divisional and campus-wide activities and events as required.
  7. Plan and complete approved professional development flex activities each semester.
  8. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  9. Perform other necessary duties as assigned by the TrAC Dean and as outlined in Board Policy.

  • Master's in geography OR Bachelor's in geography AND Master's in geology, history, meteorology or oceanography OR the equivalent OR see Interdisciplinary Studies.

  • Experience in teaching Geography or other experience working with student populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of teaching strategies and techniques, particularly as they apply to different abilities, learning styles, cultures, and ethnic groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment, including the use of multimedia hardware and software.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay current in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience or background in current GIS practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in online courses and other distance education modalities.
