About the College/Unit/Department:

The Institute for African American Studies (https://afam.uga.edu/) provides a central focus for study of the impact of African American contributions upon human culture. The Institute is dedicated to creative research on the achievements of African Americans and to stimulating instruction for a diverse community of thinkers. In addition, the Institute serves as a cultural repository and resource for the citizenry of Georgia. The Department of Theatre and Film Studies (https://www.drama.uga.edu) is a unit of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. It offers B.A. degrees in theatre and in film studies, MFA degrees in performance, design/technology and dramatic media, and the Ph.D. in theatre and performance studies. The department encompasses the applied and scholarly study of drama in a wide range of media, including stage, film and 3D computer animation. Position Summary:

The University of Georgia Department of Theatre and Film Studies and the Institute for African American Studies seek an assistant professor whose scholarly research focuses on African American theatre and performance. Additional areas of specialization might include African American film, performance methods based in Afrocentric cultures.

Responsibilities

  • teach courses in theatre and performance history theory and African American studies at the undergraduate and graduate level; the typical teaching load is 4 courses per year,
  • supervise doctoral dissertations,
  • direct productions as part of the University Theatre season,
  • participate as assistant professor and mentor in the Graduate Certificate in African American Studies,
  • Participate in service on committees, student advising and mentoring, student recruiting, and outreach.
