Associate Dean for Education, The College of Engineering

The Penn State College of Engineering is conducting a search for the Associate Dean for Education (ADE). External and internal candidates at the level of tenured professor, teaching professor or research professor are invited to apply for this academic and administrative leadership position.

Ideal candidates will have a deep appreciation of the complexities of quality engineering education, will have demonstrated the ability to be effective in teams, will think both strategically and tactically, and be committed to the college's goals of fostering equitable and inclusive environments aimed at enhancing community among faculty, staff, and students. Other essential skills include a broad knowledge of major issues and trends within higher education, a proven record of collaboration across units, the ability to manage complex projects, and a history of working productively with, and advocating, for staff. The ideal candidate will also have a record of accomplishment and impact as a faculty member in engineering or closely related field.

The ADE has primary responsibility for the college's resident and online undergraduate and graduate educational programs, and associated student academic support. Duties include a wide range of academic and administrative roles related to advancing the college's strategic goals for undergraduate and graduate education and student success. The scope of the position includes providing collaborative leadership of college-wide support for academic program development and assessment, innovative and inclusive pedagogies, and initiatives to enhance curricular and co-curricular experiences. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for academic policy implementation; and the use of data to examine, understand and improve the undergraduate and graduate student experiences. Candidates are sought who are strongly committed to equity, inclusion, and innovation in engineering education, who have substantial experience in curricular and/or administrative matters, who demonstrate a track record of advancing equity and inclusion in the educational environment, and who share a deep commitment to promoting success of all students in resident and distance educational programs.

The Associate Dean will lead a team made up of Assistant Deans for Academic Support and Global Programs, Curricular Innovation and Program Assessment, and Teaching and Learning, and Directors of the Office for Digital Learning, The Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education, and the Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory. As a leader of this team, the ADE will be responsible for charting strategic initiatives in the college around academic advising, interdisciplinary curricula, student success, accreditation, and continuous quality improvement of academic programs.

The ADE will work closely with the Associate Deans for Research, Innovation, Equity and Inclusion, and Faculty on a range of issues including graduate student recruiting and advising, integration of educational programs into research centers, inclusive pedagogy and student support, and holistic faculty development. The ADE is a member of the Dean's leadership team and will work collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Heads of the college's departments and schools, the Office of the Vice President for Undergraduate Education, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Penn State World Campus, the Faculty Senate and the Graduate Council. The ADE is a member of the Academic Council on Undergraduate Education (ACUE) and the Advisory Committee for Graduate Education (ACGE). It is expected that the ADE will work with other colleges and academic units to create and support interdisciplinary programs, coordinate new course offerings and updates to curricula. The ADE also interacts with various national organizations including the Big10+, American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), Association of American Universities (AAU), Council of Graduate Schools, and others.

The successful candidate will join a growing college at an exciting time. As a global leader in engineering education and research, the Penn State College of Engineering is engaging around the world to help solve humanity's greatest challenges. The college is working to build a more inclusive academic community and a more diverse engineering workforce; partnering in new ways across campus and with government and industry; and modernizing its facilities and reshaping the University Park campus as part of a master facilities plan implementation that includes the construction of two new teaching and research buildings on West Campus, both now underway.

Today—125 years since its founding—engineering has grown into the largest college at Penn State and one of the largest engineering colleges in the nation, with 13 academic departments and more than 950 faculty and staff. Over the past 10 years, tenure-line faculty has grown by more than 35%, with more than 25 tenure-line faculty searches underway in 2021-22. Engineering faculty propel the college's research forward, with total research expenditures last fiscal year of more than $180 million, the most of any college at Penn State. The college is also home to a community of more than 12,500 undergraduate and graduate students (including more than 2,300 students at Penn State's commonwealth campuses, where there are a variety of engineering and engineering technology programs).

In recent years, the college has introduced numerous initiatives to recruit and retain outstanding and diverse undergraduate and graduate students, and to increase opportunities, mentoring, and professional development for faculty. These efforts are making a positive difference and adding to the vibrant atmosphere in the college. To learn more, visit http://www.engr.psu.edu/.
