The Virginia Community College System welcomes applications for the presidential opening at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a comprehensive community college offering associate degree programs to prepare individuals for transfer to baccalaureate degree programs at four-year institutions, as well as associate degree programs and certificates to prepare individuals for immediate employment in high-demand careers. In 2020-2021 the college’s annualized credit enrollment was 6,714 students with an annualized FTE of 2,696. The student-faculty ratio is 17:1. 53% of the student body is enrolled in college transfer programs, 17% in career/technical programs and 30% are in dual enrollment. In addition, PVCC enrolls 3,000 individuals per year in non-credit workforce programs designed to prepare students to earn an industry-recognized credential in fields such as health care, construction, manufacturing, electronics, welding and other skilled trades. Piedmont Virginia Community College, one of 23 community colleges in Virginia, was founded in 1972. The college serves the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. The main campus is located in Albemarle County. The college’s anti-poverty and self-sufficiency programs – [email protected] and Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Education ([email protected]) – are housed in satellite offices in the downtown Charlottesville area. The college also delivers programs at the Jefferson School City Center in the downtown area and has an additional satellite center, the Giuseppe Center, located in Greene County. The college offers associate degree programs at three area correctional facilities.

PVCC is located in Central Virginia approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia. The PVCC service area includes an urban environment in Charlottesville and suburban and rural areas in the adjacent counties. Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia, perennially ranked as one of the best public universities in the nation. PVCC and UVA have a nationally recognized partnership which includes over 400 student transfers per year and numerous academic, social, and workforce opportunities for PVCC faculty, staff, and students.

The Central Virginia region offers world-class academic, cultural, athletic, culinary, and recreational opportunities. In addition to what is offered by UVA and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, PVCC offers a vibrant fine and performing arts series. The region offers opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, exploring the many wineries along the Monticello wine trail, enjoying the various craft breweries in the area, and other recreational and historical pursuits. 

Success Factors
The next president will focus on increasing student success rates in terms of retention, completion and/or transfer. She/he will increase student access to college courses, programs, and services. The president will ensure the financial position of the college through public and private support and sound fiscal management. This leader will continue the successes the college has experienced in developing partnerships with business, industry, government, and the community. The next president will set a clear vision and direction for the future. The president should possess strategic and visionary thinking ability to lead and engage the college through the implementation of the strategic plan. The president will drive diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals and priorities from the top, resulting in expanded DEI efforts across the college.

The president will develop and maintain strong leadership teams, seek continuous improvement, and foster positive change. This leader will build dynamic and successful partnerships with highly diverse stakeholders and advance fundraising efforts. Internally, she/he will ensure operational efficiency, fiscal strength, and college affordability, while building sustainability of programs to meet the needs of the students and community at large. An understanding of the mission and goals of a comprehensive community college in the 21st Century is essential, along with a clear commitment to excellence in teaching, student access/success, generating revenue, community partnerships, diversity, strategic leadership, and the principles of shared governance.

Qualifications for President
To accomplish the above, qualified candidates must have an earned doctorate degree and demonstrated successful senior executive experience. Previous experience must include significant responsibility for programs, budgets, personnel, facilities, and other appropriate administrative duties. The successful candidate must have proven leadership abilities along with excellent communications skills, a strong belief in a collaborative administrative style, as well as a servant leadership perspective. She/he must also have a broad vision for the college together with the skills and energy for implementation, in addition to the demonstrated ability to work with representatives from businesses, industry, the government, and the community at large.
