JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut School of Law seeks candidates for the position of Student Services Program Coordinator. Under the supervision of the Director of Academic Support and the general direction of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Coordinator will support the School of Law’s Academic Success Program. The Program helps students develop the analytical, writing, exam-preparation, and other skills necessary to enable them to achieve a high level of academic performance. The Coordinator will work primarily with LLM students, SJD students, and international JD and exchange students whose primary language is not English. The Coordinator may also work with other JD and exchange students as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific duties include:

  • Assisting and advising students regarding academic writing projects by providing information, feedback, and critique on issues such as thesis development, organization and structure, and English grammar and style.
  • Responding to inquiries from students, faculty, and others regarding program policies, procedures, and requirements, making referrals as appropriate.
  • Auditing student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements and to assess eligibility to graduate.
  • Delivering workshops, seminars, and presentations to instruct and inform students on writing, outlining, and other study skills and related topics.
  • Assisting with developing and designing various educational materials, videos, and other content designed to help students improve their writing on academic papers, exams, and legal documents.
  • Coordinating support for students on how to properly cite and attribute sources and avoid plagiarism.
  • Organizing, coordinating, and supervising study groups for interested LLM and international JD students.
  • Conducting studies, gathering data, evaluating information, and preparing reports for student programs and services.
  • Explaining and monitoring compliance with University policies and procedures pertaining to student activities.
  • Participating in and attending meetings of the Graduate, International, and Non-JD Programs (GINJ) Committee, and other faculty or institutional committees as directed.
  • Working closely with the Director of Academic Support, GINJ and Student Affairs staff, and other faculty and staff to assist students and ensure quality advising and program development.
  • Processing and maintaining necessary paperwork, records, and files required to support programs.
  • Additional related duties as directed.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and four to five years of related experience or a Master’s degree in a related field and two to three years of related experience.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to identify, develop, and assess the skills law school students need to achieve academic success, with a focus on legal analysis and writing.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Experience working in a law school academic support program or other experience working with students in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with international populations, or experience living or working abroad.
  • Previous legal practice experience.
