Extension Publishing Director


Location: Moscow, Off Campus Location - UI extension/office locations across the state of Idaho

Division/College: Col of Agricultural & Life Sciences

Employee Category: Exempt

Pay Range: $76,003 per year or higher depending on experience

Full/Part Time: Full Time

Position Summary:
The Extension Publishing Director reports to the Associate Dean/Director of Extension and is responsible for the development and execution of peer-reviewed publishing programs of the University of Idaho Extension and the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension online educational materials. The director exercises judgment and has decision-making authority of their functions to support established goals and performance targets. In addition to producing and editing their own written work along with others, the director plans, organizes and assigns work to staff. Furthermore, the director identifies and maintains relationships with interns and contractors who can support the writing, editing and publishing functions of the unit. The director is a critical member of the Extension team and advises the Associate Dean/Director on initiatives and policies that further the publishing and online Extension education goals of the college. The director coordinates closely with the other functional managers and directors to ensure work is performed efficiently and effectively.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Creative Writing, Journalism, Instructional/Curriculum Design, English, or closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a field related to the functional managerial area which has included at least one (1) year of supervisor experience.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Experience with substantive editing.
  • Written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience in print and digital publishing practices and standards, publications and instructional design for online learners.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree or graduate level education in a related discipline.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Interest in investigating and pursuing new approaches to the delivery of educational content.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience managing publishing projects from author consultation through product creation.
  • Knowledge or experience in agriculture-related fields.
  • Experience managing a multi-person department, including hiring and performance management.
  • Experience in managing project budgets.
  • Experience with publication warehousing and distribution centers.
  • Experience in creating and executing marketing plans for published products.
  • Experience creating multimedia educational products (videos, games, apps, websites).
  • Ability to read and write fluently in Spanish.
