About the Department:

The Department of Computer Science (CSC) is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering at NC State University. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research-intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to some NC State University colleges and divisions.
The CSC IT group is responsible for implementing and supporting information technology for the faculty, staff, and students of the Computer Science Department. Support services that the group offers include, but are not limited to, desktop & server support (Windows, Linux, Mac OS), teaching lab support, Web development & content management, application packaging, virtualization, application server configuration and deployment, networking, and storage solution consultation. The group supports 100+ virtual machines, 3 VMware clusters, 4 shared storage arrays, and 100+ users. The CSC IT group also supports over 1,000 computing devices, including desktops, laptops, servers, and mobile devices.

Essential Job Duties:

The Linux Administrator will support the CSC department’s Linux environments for administrative, research, and instructional functions; works as a member of the CSC IT team and reports directly to the IT manager.

The primary purpose of this position is to design, implement, administer, and support core environments consisting of, but not limited to, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Ubuntu, LAMP stack, and automated systems administration. This position must ensure high security, availability, and performance of the various systems supported in lab and server environments. Position works as part of the Computer Science IT team and involves frequent interaction with Computer Science faculty and staff regarding IT support in their teaching, research, administrative duties.

Linux System Administration

  • Configure, test, deploy, and support Linux environments.
  • Lead departmental administration of *nix-based systems and implementation and integration work with OIT on supported Linux distributions.
  • Configure and tune Linux systems for optimum and secure performance.
  • Use shell scripting to develop tools to automate system tasks, maintain and monitor systems.
  • Solid grasp of TCP/IP networking fundamentals, storage solutions, network, and host security, and relevant protocols (LDAP, SMTP, HTTP, SSL, DNS, NFS).
  • Create rpm package.
  • Participate in building new Puppet modules to support new or existing Linux products at the department and university level.

Linux Service Administration
  • Design, implement, test, and support infrastructure services, including but not limited to: Web and database services (LAMP stack), server monitoring, log management, content management systems, and virtualization services.
  • Work with other systems staff to effectively use storage devices and application tools.
  • Collect, identify, analyze, and report emerging and existing security risks to help build response actions and improve and monitor risks.
  • Install, configure, and maintain networking monitoring tools and proactively monitor network traffic perimeter for traffic anomalies.

Support and Administration of Continuous Integration Tools
  • Build continuous integration environments for Computer Science courses to assist students and teaching staff build collaborative software projects, test software, run statistical analysis, and speedup lab grading.
  • This position will learn and master system installation and administration duties of continuous integration tools (e.g., Jenkins), supporting 200+ students.

Round Robin Databases & Tools
  • The Computer Science department has sensory devices that collect network flows, network bandwidths, temperatures, humidity that require managing large time-series data and data visualization. This position will master the integration of such sensor devices with Round Robin Database Tools to graphically represent the health of our department network and environment parameters. Integration of these components also requires advanced knowledge of shell scripting.

System Administration of Linux Computer Lab Desktops
  • Responsible for administering 77+ Linux computer lab desktops. These machines require specialized software image builds unique to our department (e.g., GPU CUDA platform support). Approximately 550+ students use these machines.

Cloud Client Computing (Linux-based)
  • This position stays current with virtual desktop/server infrastructure and cloud solutions to virtualize classroom desktops and server-class hosts.

Teaching, Classroom/lab, & Desktop Support
  • Assist professors, TAs, and administrative staff with hardware and Linux-based software tasks.
  • Manage Linux workstations deployed in public areas, TA/RA spaces, and senior design center. Management duties of such equipment and build include installing, configuring, documenting, and maintaining equipment, network infrastructure, and firewall policies for all these spaces; creating scripts to optimize and automate configuration and usability.
  • Explains faculty, students, and staff desktop applications and operating system tasks professionally in person, by email (helpdesk management system), and by phone. Patience and strong customer service skills are required to communicate effectively with customers.
  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network printers.
  • Assist in installation and support for internal IT Infrastructure services:
  • Work with other IT staff to effectively use and maintain server rooms.
  • Provide planning and coordination for *nix system maintenance.
  • As needed and as opportunities arise, assist IT colleagues and manager to research, design, and install new services, test and improve current services, including but not limited to software systems, networking technologies, and specialized server equipment.
  • Proactively consults with faculty and staff on hardware and software issues to better and securely support administrative, teaching, and research efforts. Specific in-depth understanding of the following products/services:

Linux Server and Workstation System Administration
  • Network monitoring tools
  • Shell scripting and system automation
  • Firewalls
  • Online backups system concepts and best practices for Linux systems, including NFS and CIFS protocols
  • TCP/IP stack
  • Provide oversight, guidance, and expertise on projects surrounding strategy and best practices for software and hardware upgrade projects; including Linux infrastructure server upgrades.
  • Communicate clearly and maintain an effective relationship with affected customers, team members, and management.
  • Respond to each trouble ticket in a timely and professional manner; diagnose, fix and/or escalate each case as required.
  • Document solutions in help-desk management system where appropriate. Prioritize appropriately; Provide feedback to faculty interested in utilizing technologies stated as critical responsibilities.
  • Carry an approved smart device and participate in IT infrastructure monitoring coverage schedules.

Other Responsibilities:

This position includes a variety of tasks, activities, and responsibilities typical to all CSC IT Staff. Proactive participation in the CSC support activities, learning with IT, problem reporting, carrying of approved smart device and NCSU badge during work hours.

This position will advise IT Manager on issues related to administration of Linux operating systems, best practices, technological issues and planning, goal setting, equipment purchases, and server room maintenance. Additionally, provide LAN administration and hardware

Minimum Education and Experience:

Master’s degree; or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming or closely related area; or an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology or Networking Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in operations analysis and design, systems programming or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

Applicants must possess comprehensive knowledge of Linux systems administration. This is not an entry-level position – only candidates who demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Linux administration will be considered.

  • Experience with Linux-based configuration management technologies.
  • Knowledge of Linux application and package creation and deployment tools.
  • Significant systems administration experience with Linux.
  • Experience automating Linux administration tasks

The candidate must be a self-starter, customer-oriented, team player, and have strong communication skills.

This position may require occasional weekend and evening work during on-call support rotation.

Candidates should have a background in customer service and system administration. Group interaction and teamwork skills are a necessity. Excellent interpersonal skills.
Other skills required:
  • Experience working with both virtual servers and virtual desktops
  • Experience using VMWare tools to manage virtualized environment
  • Experience managing LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) installations
  • Experience using a variety of tools to monitor uptime, performance, log analysis, and load of systems (e.g. Splunk)
  • Experience programming in Perl, Python, PHP, Bash shell
  • Experience with automated tools that support server configuration (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Foreman)
  • Experience working with Version control systems (e.g., Github)
  • Understanding of core networking and security principles

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with application testing and deployment environments (Jenkins)
  • Experience configuring Apache and Tomcat servers and its associated modules such as PHP and mod_ssl
  • Experience with Shibboleth and Active Directory authentication
  • Knowledge of Cloud Computing Technologies (OpenStack)
  • Knowledge of Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies
  • Experience with open source software for web serving, reverse proxying, caching, and load balancing (e.g., ngix)
  • Experience with open source firewall solutions
  • Experience with open source container orchestration system for automating application deployments, scaling, and management (e.g. kubernetes).
  • Practical background in cloud (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google), on-premise, and hybrid architectures.
