General Description

Established in 1926, the College of the Sequoias (COS) consists of the Visalia, Hanford, and Tulare campuses in the heart of the Central Valley and falls under the Sequoias Community College District. COS is a Hispanic Serving Institution with a 66% Latinx student population that serves a diverse community of learners. COS provides a wide range of opportunities in transfer, general education, career, and technical programs for our students, most of whom are first-generation college students. We are dedicated to recruiting faculty who are committed to helping a diverse population of students achieve their educational goals. College of the Sequoias is seeking an anti-racist, equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Social Science Division Department beginning August 2022.

Job Duties

  • Provide academic instruction to students in courses including Introduction to Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies, Black American Studies, American Indian Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, and Asian American Studies.
  • Use different learning and teaching methods appropriate for community college students.
  • Assess student performance and progress through various course assignments.
  • Perform related teaching duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities related to enrollment, attendance, and student drops.
  • Refer students to appropriate support services, programs, and/or resources as needed.
  • Contribute to the development and growth of the Ethnic Studies Department and to the growth of its Associate Degree for Transfer.
  • Regularly collaborate with discipline faculty to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for collecting and reporting data on Student Learning Outcomes as needed for each course.
  • Cooperate on department initiatives, program review, program and student learning outcomes development, and assessment to improve student learning.
  • Satisfy faculty professional development obligation.
  • Assignments may include evening classes, weekend classes, online, and teaching at our locations in Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected.
  • Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Master’s in Ethnic Studies field OR
  • A master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies.
  • Or the equivalent
  • Or see Interdisciplinary Studies AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The Social Science Division/Ethnic Studies Department is looking for evidence of the following:

  • Proven capacity to teach Ethnic Studies courses, particularly in Black American Studies, with an interdisciplinary, intersectional, and culturally responsive approach to students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
  • Commitment to creating positive racially conscious intellectual space and providing support for students of color, women, LGBTQIA and historically marginalized groups, through teaching and advocacy.
  • Evidence of an ongoing pedagogical and professional dedication to anti-racism, equity, inclusion, community organizing, and social justice.
  • Create student service-learning outcomes to apply classroom learning through civic engagement assignments that service the college and/or the greater community.
  • Understands the importance of individual and collective accountability as educators and as institutions of higher education to engage in practices for closing equity gaps.
  • Reframe inequities as a problem of practice while working collegially and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community members to enhance student and institutional success.

    Organization

    College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

    In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

    COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
