Position Summary

A full-time Assistant Professor (Fixed-Term) position in Pavement Engineering is available in the GeoPave group in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Michigan State University. The successful candidate is expected to help manage existing research projects of the GeoPave group, write research proposals in the general area of pavement engineering, provide institutional/national service activities, and teach courses as needed.

The GeoPave faculty will work closely with the successful candidate in a collaborative environment and help the candidate achieve career goals. The appointment will be initially for one year with the possibility of two additional years based on satisfactory performance and continuation of funding.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Pavement/Geotechnical Engineering

Minimum Requirements
  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Applicants must have at least five years of experience in asphalt pavement analysis, design, evaluation methods, asphalt mixture and binder testing, and conducting geotechnical tests.
  • Applicants must have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Applicants are expected to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated.
  • Driver license.
  • Desired Qualifications

    Research expertise in asphalt binder and mixture testing, pavement structural modeling, and non-destructive testing. Ability to supervise graduate and undergraduate researchers.

    Summary of Health Risks

    Per MSU Office of Regulatory Affairs this position will require an annual hearing test due to asphalt lab work area being above 85 decibels at times. Also, State of Michigan law requires that any employee obtain and carry a medical certification, irrespective of whether driving is an Incidental or Primary Duty, therefore chosen applicant will need monitoring, training for University Vehicle used in this position.
