Position Summary

The Laboratory for Hybrid Quantum Systems at the Michigan State University (MSU) Department of Physics and Astronomy and Spartan Innovations are seeking qualified applicants for a postdoctoral research position to investigate quantum systems and technologies based on the coupling of superconducting qubits to high-frequency surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. In addition to developing novel quantum devices based on these systems, the project is focused on advancing these systems to a higher level of technology readiness for quantum sensing and quantum memory applications (see below).

The postdoc will design and fabricate novel hybrid quantum systems coupling superconducting qubits to surface acoustic wave devices and perform measurements on these devices to characterize their properties and performance. These measurements will be conducted in the Laboratory for Hybrid Quantum Systems at MSU under the supervision of Prof. Johannes Pollanen.

Additionally, the postdoc will work with Prof. Pollanen and members of Spartan Innovations to advance the level of technology readiness of these systems. These efforts will require the postdoc to fulfill the following requirements:

  • Complete Regional I-Corps
  • Support a SBIR/STTR submission (1 minimum)
  • Submit invention disclosures (Target 2), for the supported technology by end of 1-year program
  • Participate in regular updates with Spartan Innovations stakeholders
  • Submission of a final report including 2 executive summaries: i) technology and ii) commercialization pathways
  • Develop a pitch deck
  • Attend select business training sessions

The ideal candidate will have proven ability to independently solve problems, design and conduct experiments, possess good communication and collaboration skills, and have a desire to advance quantum science into quantum technologies.

This is a one-year appointment with the potential for renewal for up to one additional one year appointment, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance on requirements listed above.

Organization

Working at Michigan State University

Spartans work every day to advance the common good in uncommon ways.

Together, we tackle some of the world’s toughest problems to find solutions that make life better—from alternative energy to better food safety to breakthrough medical and environmental applications achieved through rare isotope research.

We teach. We explore and we discover. We collaborate and lead. We innovate, inspire, and empower. We achieve our potential and create circumstances that help our students and others achieve theirs.

We're good at it, and we've been at it for more than 150 years.

The nation’s pioneer land-grant university, MSU began as a bold experiment that democratized higher education and helped bring science and innovation into everyday life. The revolutionary concept became a model for the nation.

Today, MSU is one of the top research universities in the world—on one of the biggest, greenest campuses in the nation. Home to nationally ranked and recognized academic, residential college, and service-learning programs, we’re a diverse community of dedicated students and scholars, athletes and artists, scientists and leaders.

In ways both practical and profound, we work to create a stronger, more sustainable, and more hopeful future for all.
