To build upon a record of success and in support of its newly named Chancellor, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Human Resources. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Administration (VCA), the Director of Human Resources will partner with Chancellor James T. Minor and the VCA to provide strategic and tactical guidance on matters including recruitment and labor and employee relations.

SIUE is one of the largest employers in the Madison-St. Clair County region, with over 2,400 full- and part-time employees at three campus locations that include a sizable grant-funded Head Start unit, Charter High School and educational services and programs located in East St. Louis, Illinois, and the School of Dental Medicine located in Alton, Illinois. The Director will lead and direct the daily operations of the Office of Human Resources at SIUE, including a team of thirty (30) HR professionals in the following areas:
• Recruitment and Civil Service Testing
• Employment, Compensation and Classification
• Labor and Employee Relations
• Payroll, Compliance, HRIS and Benefit Services

The next Director will be an experienced, transactional and transformational leader who will help shape the future of the institution. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to visionary strategies that produce both qualitative and quantifiable outcomes for the betterment of the University. This candidate will be a leader who is motivated to take on new tasks and find solutions to problems. They should inspire other HR employees to be equally as motivated in fulfilling their daily tasks.

The Director of Human Resources will be charged with advancing an equitable and inclusive workplace culture. The position will also:
• Assist the University in attracting and retaining qualified individuals to support the University’s programs and educational mission including the University’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
• Support federally funded programs in maintaining compliance;
• Manage the department budget within guidelines to meet the changing needs of the University;
• Serve as the Designated Employer Representative to the State Universities Civil Service System (SUCSS);
• Ensure that all university human resources policies and practices are in compliance with SUCSS, State Universities Retirement System (SURS), IRS, and other statutory or regulatory requirements;
• Provide HR related guidance and consultation to the University community, including the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, Provost, Deans and Directors;
• Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with eighteen (18) labor organizations represented throughout the university as well as develop and oversee strategies related to contract negotiations.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Management, Business Administration, or closely related field
-Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible human resources experience, including supervision of staff

Preferred Qualifications:

-Master’s degree or advanced terminal degree in a related field preferred
-Successful completion of a professional certification program such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM- CP or SHRM-SCP
-Higher education experience
