Position Summary:

UGA Field Services provides wellness and emergency care in an ambulatory setting to the surrounding community. The UGA Equine Sports Medicine Service is a new program that provides sports medicine services in an ambulatory setting. This position will be a hybrid position, in which the successful candidate will complete an alternative track in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation while also serving as a staff veterinarian to help cover large animal wellness and emergency cases both during the day and after hours. The resident will work predominantly with clinicians trained in equine sports medicine as well as podiatry part of the time and will spend the remaining time seeing cases on their own. In addition to time spent seeing equine sports medicine cases, the resident will spend time with Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging, Large Animal Surgery, Large Animal Internal Medicine, and Anesthesiology to complete residency requirements. The resident will share after-hours emergency care with the two Field Services interns. Emergency coverage will involve seeing both horses and other large animal species (cattle, small ruminants, camelids). The resident will also participate in Sports Medicine journal club and rounds and will present seminars to fulfill residency requirements.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with faculty and farm/technical staff. Ability to communicate effectively with professionals and veterinary students. Professional and personal qualifications. Motivation to be an active and integral part of busy large animal teaching hospital service.

Physical Demands:

Lift 50 lbs. Work with large animals. May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard surfaces. May drive university vehicle when necessary to perform job duties.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Service seeing clinical cases. Clinical case duties include performing musculoskeletal examinations, including lameness evaluation, as well as performing diagnostic imaging and any necessary treatments related to the musculoskeletal system. The staff veterinarian will see daytime preventative medicine cases and emergencies on all species, including horses, cattle, small ruminants, and camelids. The staff veterinarian will also be responsible for helping to cover after-hours ambulatory emergencies on all species, including horses, cattle, small ruminants, camelids, and pigs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Clinical teaching of students and interns. Clinical teaching duties include teaching students while seeing clinical cases to ensure the student has a thorough understanding of the case. The staff veterinarian will also help with teaching scheduled rounds for the students, covering common large animal conditions. The staff veterinarian will also participate in journal club and other resident rounds. No didactic teaching or research is required for the position. However, the resident will complete one research project to fulfill residency requirements.
