Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Non-tenure track nurse practitioner teaching faculty will teach in the College of Nursing in areas of expertise, provide service to the College, University, community, and profession and contribute to the mission and strategic priorities of the College of Nursing.

We are currently seeking applicants with certification in the following areas:

  • Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (Preferable if certified in both primary and acute care).)
  • Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner

  1. Participating in the ongoing development, implementation, evaluation, and enhancement of nursing academic programs:
    1. Participating in program and course revisions.
    2. Revising assigned courses to reflect program outcomes, AACN essentials, and other professional standards, state board of nursing minimum standards, current evidence and best practice.
    3. Collaborating with emphasis area coordinators, clinical coordinators, program directors, and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs to identify the types of clinical experiences and sites needed for optimal clinical education of students.
    4. Teaching graduate and undergraduate nursing courses as assigned.
    5. Supervising nursing students as assigned.
    6. Collaborating with clinical agencies in arranging student clinical experiences (e.g. orientation to objectives of clinical experience, course syllabus, clinical schedule, et al) as appropriate.
    7. Participating in the development of academic policies affecting the admission, progression, graduation and dismissal of students.
    8. Participating in the evaluation and ongoing enhancement of the curricula.
    9. Applying evidence from best education practices to curriculum development and to teaching.

    Serve the College of Nursing, University, community and profession:
    1. Participating in College of Nursing faculty, standing committee, task force and other meetings.
    2. Participating in University Assembly and Faculty Senate Committees and ad hoc committees.
    3. Participating in community and professional activities as appropriate.
    4. Participating in scholarly projects as appropriate.

    Contributing to the mission and strategic priorities of the College of Nursing and the University of Missouri-St. Louis

    Collaborating effectively with other faculty and staff members both within the College of Nursing and throughout the University and community to develop inter-professional academic, clinical, and research opportunities.

    Engagement in clinical scholarship or research.

Reporting Lines

NTT NP Teaching faculty report to the Executive Director of Graduate Practice Programs.

Minimum Qualifications


A graduate degree in nursing; doctorate in nursing or a related field.

Certification as a nurse practitioner.

Missouri RN Licensure (or eligibility for) as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) prior to employment.

Three or more years of experience as a registered professional nurse.

Evidence of successful classroom and/or clinical teaching experience.

Effective interpersonal skills and cultural competence.

Ability to work independently and within teams.

Sensitivity to working with a diverse group of students and colleagues.


Evidence of a program of clinical scholarship or research.

Experience with instructional media and technology

Excellent organizational skills

  6. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary issues in nursing and healthcare.
  7. Work with the Program Director, academic support services in the College, and those within the University to ensure recruitment of excellent students, retention of students, and high graduation, licensure, and certification rates.

Appointment Terms

12 Month Academic


Faculty Handbook, Collected Rules and Regulations for the University of Missouri, Missouri Board of Nursing and CCNE will be guidelines for this position.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Sensory Perception necessary for effective communication (constantly)

Reasonable facility of movement to carry out teaching, research and service obligations in the classroom and clinical settings (frequently)

Must have the ability to assimilate information, reason well, and to conduct classes in such a way that students are engaged as measured on the student evaluations.

Must be able to communicate effectively, efficiently and sensitively with students, peers, staff and other members of the university and community.
