The nonpartisan Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) seeks to advance effective climate and energy policies in the United States and serves as a resource to state and local communities that are working to cut carbon pollution and prepare for climate change. GCC informs the development of state and federal policies that: Reduce carbon pollution from power plants and stationary sources, support clean and resilient transportation options, and help communities adapt to climate change.

The Associate Director for the Adaptation Program is a key member of the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) and provides leadership and strategic direction to GCC's adaptation team. Reporting to the Adaptation Program Director, and working closely with other Center directors and University administrators, and interacting with senior local, state, and federal officials; faculty and senior administration; and external partners, funders, and media, the Associate Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Management & Strategic Planning

 

 

  • Develop and implement the GCC adaptation work plan, in coordination with the GCC leadership team
  • Supervise the work of junior staff, including an Institute Associate, Justice Fellow, and student research assistants
  • Supervise student projects related to adaptation and resilience
  • Support the Adaptation Program Director in monthly budget review related to project funding for the mitigation program

 


Research & Development

 

 

  • Conduct substantive analysis and research on topics related to climate change adaptation - for example, efforts to adapt at the state and local adaptation options, federal law and policy affecting adaptation, and equity considerations related to adaptation and resilience
  • Provide direction to associates, fellows, student research assistants, and consultants; and coordinating collaborative research with partner organizations

 


Outreach, Engagement & Facilitation

Conduct outreach, engagement, and facilitation with state and federal leaders and staff, NGOs, companies, the media, and others - including organizing meetings and events with senior government leaders, engagement with the press, and public speaking

Fundraising

 

 

  • Work closely with the GCC leadership team to secure adaptation funding that captures strategic opportunities to advance GCC's research and policy agenda
  • Draft and develop timely and high-quality proposals and progress reports to existing and potential funders

 


Qualifications

 

 

  • Master's degree
  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience in climate change law and/or policy, with a focus on climate adaptation and resilience
  • Experience developing presentations, proposals, memos, work plans, white papers, and other written materials
  • Excellent research, analytical, speaking, and writing skills
  • Professional judgment to represent GCC in interactions with senior state and federal officials, funders, students, and other stakeholders

 


Preferred qualification

Juris Doctor preferred
