Since 1942, Field Period® has been the cornerstone on which a Keuka College education is built. Completed annually by every student, Field Period® is an immersive, 140-hour experiential learning opportunity that ensures Keuka College students graduate with appropriate praxis in their chosen discipline. Guided by faculty and supported by the newly formed Center for Experiential Learning and Career Engagement, Keuka College seeks a Founding Dean to lead the Center and further develop, champion, and promote our signature academic hallmark.

The Founding Dean will be a dynamic and strategic leader with in-depth knowledge and experience in experiential education and career development. The Dean will assume a lead role in developing and enhancing the College’s reputation as a leader in experiential education. The Dean will fulfill key elements of institutional strategic goals of engaging students through high-impact pedagogical practices that are innovative and culturally responsive learning opportunities in support of a transformational educational experience for our students.

The Center for Experiential Learning and Career Engagement supports experiential learning opportunities, including global learning, and promotes a better understanding of the career development process by helping undergraduate and graduate students develop the key competencies necessary to make informed decisions and achieve their career goals. The Dean establishes connections and facilitates interaction among students, faculty, alumni, employers, and organizations to generate opportunities that help students pursue their personal and professional objectives. The review of applications will begin on February 15, 2022.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Position Keuka College as a national leader in experiential learning
  • Ensure Field Period® is a uniformly robust learning opportunity for all Keuka College students
  • Establish strategic priorities for the Center for Experiential Learning and Career Engagement; collect and analyze data, prepare an annual report, and benchmark against regional and national competitors
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy to advance high-impact experiential learning, including Field Period®, as a signature element of a Keuka College education
  • Promote faculty interest in and the development of experiential learning opportunities embedded in or as a co-curricular element of their courses and associated outcomes assessment
  • Develop, oversee, and grow global initiatives, including faculty-led programs, study abroad, and international internships
  • Provide workshops/presentations on experiential learning, the Field Period® program, and career development to all College venues (students, faculty, staff, prospective students and parents, alumni, and the public)
  • Provide orientation to the Field Period® program through KC 101 and KC 103 courses
  • Monitor use of online career platforms to approve internships/Field Period® experiences, jobs, employers, and to post-career events
  • Oversee logistics of the Field Period® program, including risk management practices and procedures
  • Provide one-on-one guidance regarding Field Period® opportunities and procedures, and career counseling expertise to all students, including non-traditional and international students, and alumni regarding the job-search process, interviewing, resume, and letter writing, and all other facets of career planning
  • Maintain a comprehensive website providing resources for faculty and students with links to policies, procedures, required Field Period® program documents, and institutional database of internship and service opportunities
  • Coordinate Field Period® scholarships, Experiential Learner of the Year, and Site Supervisor Awards
  • Work closely with the Alumni Relations Office and Alumni Executive Council to increase opportunities for alumni to host Keuka Field Period® students
  • Promote Field Period® success stories with Marketing and Communications
  • Provide strategic direction, support, and supervision of Career Development staff to ensure progress toward meeting strategic goals
  • Collaborate with Advancement to identify and pursue possible outside funding sources for experiential learning
  • Create opportunities for upper-level students to serve as peer mentors and facilitators for experiential learning, following best practices in peer mentorship
  • Identify, develop, and implement new initiatives specific to partnerships with academic divisions, employers, and institutional partners to ensure career preparation, experiential learning, and internship programs are aligned with changing economic trends
  • Develop an active career exploration, readiness, recruitment, and experiential learning process for all academic areas
  • In coordination with Career Development, plan and conduct all College events, including Field Period® Exhibition, career and resource fairs, that prepare students for employment and provide employment opportunities
  • Identify access and barrier issues limiting the participation and success of students from underrepresented backgrounds in pursuing career advising and collaborate to design and implement steps to advance participation and career success of all students
  • Utilize and adapt technologies as needed to assist with tracking data, developing and evaluating services and the effectiveness of career interventions
  • Manage all aspects of the Center including a budget, personnel supervision, and long- and short-range operating and strategic planning
  • Represent the College in various professional organizations
  • Serve on division and college committees as requested
  • Model superior customer service
  • Responsible for ensuring that assigned tasks are completed in compliance with various institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude at all times towards co-workers, internal and external customers, representing Keuka College, its programs, policies, and procedures in a positive and professional manner. Maintain effective working relationships to ensure institution-wide teamwork.
  • Attend provided/necessary training and other meetings to support effectiveness within the position as required.
  • Consistently demonstrate high standards of integrity by supporting the Keuka College mission, vision, and values and adhering to institutional policies.
  • Maintain a high regard for student privacy in accordance with the FERPA privacy policies and procedures.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is expected and required.
  • Perform other functions as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications:


D. or Ed.D. preferred. Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration; Higher Education Leadership; Career Development; Counseling; or other closely related field required.


  • Experience working in a liberal arts institution with traditional and non-traditional age students and alumni preferred.
  • Experience leading others in a higher education environment preferred.
  • Record of scholarly peer-reviewed presentations and/or publications in the field of career development or experiential learning preferred.
  • Three years college-level career counseling, advising, internship/field placement or other relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated success in the development and implementation of programs and services to support and nurture a diverse student body.
  • Practical and operational understanding of experiential education.
  • Current knowledge of the job market, occupational outcomes of a variety of disciplines, and knowledge of career guidance and job search tools (e.g., LinkedIn, Handshake).
  • Demonstrate a proficient and growing level of knowledge and understanding regarding best practices in career, internship, and experiential learning development.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and global perspective.
  • Commitment to global citizenship, inclusion, and social justice.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to analyze data sets and develop and assess data-driven strategies.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of computer and technology-related software and equipment, including Microsoft Office products and database systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to provide exemplary customer service to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure with a high tolerance for interruptions, and the ability to work with diverse groups of people.

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional evening hours/weekends.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
