Job Description:


This position will oversee the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) process for the college. In collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs, Communications and Admissions, the PLA Coordinator will create a comprehensive recruitment strategy for adult learners. The PLA Coordinator will work closely with faculty/staff, employers, and administration to facilitate experiential learning credit which includes but are not limited to portfolio assessment, military evaluations, faculty referral, and challenge exams. The PLA Coordinator will maintain records for PLA submissions and will work with faculty and the Office of Academic Affairs to ensure that credits obtained through the PLA process maintain the academic rigor and integrity of credit coursework. The PLA Coordinator will advise students throughout the PLA process and will serve as the point of contact for all inquiries about the PLA process.


Responsibilities:


  • Market Prior Learning Assessment to employers/employees in Dutchess and Putnam counties as part of a non-traditional student recruitment plan.
  • Serve as a point of contact to answer all questions from students, faculty, staff, and employers related to PLA.
  • Create/revise and recommend DCC procedures and practices related to PLA to maintain consistency with standards related to accreditation.
  • Advise students throughout the PLA process.
  • Conduct training sessions to assist faculty and staff in understanding their roles in the PLA process and in developing PLA assessment guides for their courses.
  • Serve as Chair for the PLA Committee.
  • In concert with the Office of Communication develop a web presence on the college website that addresses the PLA process and contains all forms and information needed for PLA student submission.
  • Create an efficient data tracking and reporting system for students pursuing PLA, including the credits and methods of awarding credit.
  • Work closely with the academic departments in supporting the integration between classroom learning and experiential learning.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Academic Affairs and the academic departments to develop PLA related programming in the classroom including facilitation of classroom presentations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of policies and best practices (CAEL, Council for Adult and Experiential Learning) related to aligning learning and work so that adults achieve academic and career success.
  • Collaborate with campus constituents on any PLA campus initiatives.

Salary and Benefits:


The starting salary will be $53,316.00. Dutchess Community College offers a comprehensive benefit package which includes medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, and employee assistance programs.



Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with assessing credit for prior learning
  • Experience developing relationships with community employers and organizations
  • Experience utilizing assessment metrics
  • Experience working with adult clients and knowledge of the fundamental principles of adult education
  • Demonstrated track record of establishing respectful relationships with adult learners
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, oral, active listening, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with multiple constituents.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master's degree in higher education, education, or related field
  • Language Skills: Conversational Spanish speaking skills
  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • Experience working in online learning formats
  • Experience working in a community college setting
  • Experience working with underrepresented student populations

Working at Dutchess Community College 

Dutchess Community College has been in Dutchess County for more than 50 years. We have the reputation of being the best community college in the state for academic excellence and the success of our graduates. Students who transfer to a four-year school after Dutchess do better and graduate at a higher rate than students who transfer from other colleges. Plus, we currently have the lowest tuition of any college or university in the state.

Our main campus is in Poughkeepsie, with a major extension site in Wappingers Falls. Students can also take DCC classes at high schools throughout the county.

We offer associate degrees and certificates in more than 60 program areas. Some of these programs are occupationally-oriented, designed to provide the skills students need to enter the job market immediately upon graduation. Other programs are designed to provide the first two years' of study toward a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. The certificate programs provide a condensed program in a particular field of study and usually can be completed in one or two semesters of study.

There are three different types of degrees from which students can choose:

The Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.) is used primarily for transfer programs that lead to the bachelor of arts degree at a four-year college or university. It may be used for general liberal arts programs.

The Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) may be used for certain occupationally-oriented studies, but is primarily designed to serve science or professionally-related programs that lead to transfer to a bachelor of science degree at a four-year college or university.

The Associate in Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) is structured as an occupationally-oriented degree. However, it may be appropriate as a transfer degree to certain types of specialized baccalaureate program such as the bachelor's of technology.
