Robert and Donna Manning College of Nursing & Health Sciences, Department of Urban Public Health

Tenure-Track Associate Professor Position Available

Focus areas: Health Education & Health Promotion

The newly formed Department of Urban Public Health, within the Robert and Donna Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences (MCNHS), UMass Boston, invites applicants to join our diverse college as tenure-track or tenured (depending on qualifications) Associate Professor, beginning September 1, 2022. The successful candidate will have a joint appointment in the Department of Nursing, with a primary appointment in Urban Public Health. Candidates with experience and interest in leadership and program development preferred. Our Public Health programs focus on health in urban populations of all ages and target improving health equity in populations at risk for healthcare disparities. We actively seek to enrich our student and faculty ranks, recognizing that diversity of experience deepens the intellectual endeavor.

The successful candidate must:

  • have an earned doctorate in public health or a related field with demonstrated expertise in health education and health promotion. Preference will be given to applicants with funded research and peer-reviewed, data-based publications focused on these areas or related topics.
  • have established a successful independent research agenda and demonstrated ability to secure external funding for research
  • demonstrate teaching and mentoring experience in higher education at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Applicants should provide their CV and a cover letter that includes (a) a summary of their research interests and experience, (b) a teaching statement; and (c) a diversity statement that details how their research, mentoring, and teaching will promote diversity and inclusivity at our College. Application review will begin in February 2022 and continue until the position is filled. Shortlisted applicants will be requested to provide names of three references. For more information, please go to www.umb.edu/academics/cnhs. The MCNHS values the cultural and social diversity of our faculty, staff, and students as vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. We seek to embed within our curricular and co-curricular activities the principle that pluralism within a learning community is a source of insight and effectiveness.

The College and University offer strong internal and external mentoring programs for faculty, including grant proposal and manuscript preparation, and a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research opportunities. Current faculty collaborations include major academic and medical institutions in and around Boston, including the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and many community, public, and private health care agencies. The National Cancer Institute funds the University of Massachusetts Boston-Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center grant (www.umb-dfhcc.org/); this longstanding collaboration has enabled faculty at both institutions to strengthen and extend partnerships for research on health disparities, pre- and post-doctoral training, and community outreach.

The newly approved BA and BS programs in Urban Public Health are designed in accordance with accreditation guidelines of the Council for Education in Public Health (CEPH). Graduate programs in Urban Public Health are under development. The BS, MS, and DNP nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The MS and DNP programs focus on preparation of Family Nurse Practitioners, Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioners, and Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialists. The PhD in nursing program focuses on population health and health policy.
