Coordinator, Marketing Communications & Dakota Student Business Operations

Position Information: DescriptionThe predominant areas of responsibilities support Memorial Union (MU) services and operations through department-level marketing communications, graphic design, digital content management of MU websites, and building-wide digital displays for marketing, programming venue with video board, and event services schedules.      

The position also provides approximately 25% support for the student-operated Dakota Student (DS) which operates primarily during the academic year. Primary responsibilities include DS business operations, support for advertising sales functions primarily run by advertising student staff, quarterly ad sales billing and tracking of sales revenues, coordination of print publication, website or other support agreements, and student employee-related human resources recruitment, hiring, and payroll functions in coordination with the Editor-in-Chief. The coordinator works with the Director of the Memorial Union to oversee the DS revenue generated and student fee funded budgets. This position will not censure or exercise control over the student-managed content of the Dakota Student.   

Department Descriptions:

Memorial Union (MU)

The Memorial Union is aligned under the Vice President for Student Affairs and reports to the Associate Vice President & Associate Dean of Students. In support of the strategic plan and missions of UND and the Division of Student Affairs, the mission of the Memorial Union is to support divisional and institutional goals focused on recruitment, retention, engagement, and the success of students.  This is done by accommodating the space needs of departments and support services, serving as a major employer of students, and providing services that are essential for the daily life of students and the campus community. 

Dakota Student (DS)

The Dakota Student is a student-operated entity organized as a department with human resources functions and business operations that report organizationally to the Director of the Memorial Union.  The Dakota Student writes and produces both online and print newspaper content and podcasts serving primarily UND students and the greater UND campus community. Content is published during the fall and spring semesters.  The Dakota Student is funded primarily by student fees with additional support generated through advertising sales revenue. 

Duties & ResponsibilitiesMemorial Union department-level digital marketing communications, website management and special projects.
  • Manages content development & maintenance for MU department websites using Omni platform and UND branded templates
  • Creates and coordinates content and designs for MU communications which may include digital or fixed displays, video footage for special projects, building operations signage, and enhanced floor plans, or wayfinding maps etc.
  • Serves as the department lead to coordinate or generate content for UND social media accounts.
Memorial Union building-wide digital displays & video board technology management
  • Designs department-level templates and graphics for building-wide digital display signage.
  • Researches, coordinates, and manages the use of multimedia or licensed streaming content for use with building digital displays or programming venue video board.  Works with UND Procurement, Athletics, other campus partners or external entities as applicable.
  • Works in collaboration with MU Event Services & Operations staff on digital technology, graphic design or other content interfaces to support scheduled events or building supported services with campus partners and internal/external clients and entities.
  • Works in collaboration with MU staff, UND University Information Technology or Marketing & Communications departments or external vendors to support or troubleshoot MU building digital display and video board equipment or content management.
Dakota Student business operations and advertising/marketing oversight and support
  • Provides resource support to the Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Board and/or Advertising Representatives to increase marketing awareness of the Dakota Student.
  • Provides support to increase awareness of Dakota Student journalism, marketing, advertising, art and/or photography related credit bearing internship opportunities and/or student staff employment positions.
  • Oversees and provides support for the DS Office to include general administrative office duties, supply and equipment purchases, and routing of phone and business traffic.
  • Coordinates newspaper printing and website host agreements through UND Procurement & Payment Services.
  • Oversees the design and preparation of advertising forms (contracts, advertising fact sheets, schedules, rate cards etc.)
  • Ensures that business operations functions and advertising policies utilized are consistent with UND policies and procedures.
Student employee human resources and payroll functions
  • Performs Human Resources and Payroll Services personnel actions for student employees in accordance with UND institutional guidelines.
  • Writes and maintains job descriptions for direct reporting student staff positions and ensures all position descriptions incorporate student learning outcomes.
  • Interviews, hires, schedules, and terminates direct reporting student staff.
  • Collaborates with the Dakota Student Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for DS student staff position descriptions that report to the EIC and/or members of the Editorial Board (includes positions focused on: writing, photography, graphic design/art, production, and delivery distribution).
Department and university involvement, training and professional development, and other duties as assignedRequired Competencies
  • Staff or volunteer coordination and/or supervision experience.
  • Experience monitoring and/or managing budgets.
  • Possess a student-centered philosophy committed to supporting a work and campus environment focused on inclusion and diversity and the building of campus community.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, organizational and written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage planning details, logistics, deadlines and priorities.   
  • Ability to travel locally to generate advertising sales for the Dakota Student as may be needed.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree with major field or study emphasis on Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Graphic Design, Journalism or other related field.
  • Graphic design experience
  • Computer experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Suite Applications (InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop) or other desktop publishing programs.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year of experience working in a media relations environment (i.e. Marketing, Advertising Practices/Sales, Communications, Public Relations, Graphic Design Services, Journalism or other related field).
  • Work experience within a departmental unit, program or service area.
  • Experience with website content management systems such as Omni.
  • Experience with Google web analytics and use of social media strategies to improve website effectiveness.
  • Experience with general business or retail service financial processes such as billing/invoicing, cash handling and/or credit card payment systems.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, advising or mentoring student staff or volunteers within a University or other educational setting.
  • Experience with higher education marketing trends.    
Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$45,500+/annual, exempt, benefited, full-time

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday-Friday; 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Preferred Start Date: February 16, 2022 or pending availability.
