Habib University seeks to appoint a dynamic and visionary Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. The incumbent will provide leadership for approximately 100 faculty and staff in the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering and will also head the Board of Faculty. S/he will be responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, and developing academic programs; supervising academic staff; collaborating with other divisions of the University to analyze and develop recommendations in response to evolving issues; and provide leadership in developing and achieving strategic initiatives. The Vice President will ensure that students receive a high quality education by encouraging excellence in teaching, research, and service among the faculty.

Habib University is a first-of-its-kind American-style undergraduate liberal arts and sciences institution in Pakistan located in Karachi, offering an interdisciplinary curriculum delivered by highly qualified faculty and supported through robust academic performance and student affairs programs. With the goal of becoming a global leader in defining an outstanding 21st century liberal arts education, the academic experience is grounded in the University’s distinctive Habib Liberal Core Curriculum, which all students are required to take as part of their graduation requirements. Habib University has an active outreach program to develop academic and scholarly exchanges, institutional collaborations, international learning opportunities, and to bring best practices to the University. Through partner institutions such as Claremont Colleges, Stanford, UC Berkeley, the University of Michigan and Texas A&M, Habib faculty have access to platforms for collaborative research and teaching as well as professional learning and development.

Role Description:

The position of Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty is a full-time contractual position (initial appointment is for 3-years) and reports directly to the President of the University and works closely with academic program heads and center directors.

Key responsibilities and duties:

  • Ensures that the vision for the academic programs is aligned well with the University’s strategic plan and that academic programs offer distinctive curricula that are competitive in the national and regional markets
  • Oversees the University’s provincial, national and international accreditation efforts
  • Oversees and strengthens mechanisms of shared governance at the University
  • Oversees the faculty promotion process and annual faculty reviews
  • Works directly and collaboratively with academic Program Directors to support faculty in excelling at teaching, research, creative activities, and service
  • Collaborates with University Resource Development to cultivate current and potential donors
  • Oversees implementation of major public programs such as the annual Yohsin Lecture and the Postcolonial Higher Education Conference
  • Assists the University to shape, articulate and implement its vision as an institution that is learner centered, discovery driven, and globally engaged
  • Supervises the operations of the Registrar’s Office, University Library, Academic Operations, Faculty Development, Academic Research and Student Life
  • Oversees formulation and implementation of all faculty and academic policies in collaboration with the University Policy Committee
  • Leads and serves on select University committees and task forces

The incoming VPAA and DOF will inherit a highly effective, experienced and collaborative team of professional staff running Academic Affairs.

Personal Specifications:

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate evidence of the following skills, capabilities and experience:

  • an outstanding academic record, with an earned doctorate, and qualifications meriting appointment at the rank of full professor
  • a record of progressive leadership responsibilities and success in higher education, preferably in North America or an accredited American-style institution abroad
  • an in-depth understanding and experience of working in an undergraduate liberal arts college environment that is student-centric, and committed to student success
  • a successful record supervising academic and management staff
  • a demonstrated appreciation of and commitment to shared governance, with the ability to build consensus and effectively communicate difficult decisions
  • sensitivity to cultural differences, and diversity of thought
  • an awareness of the rapidly changing character of higher education globally.

This post is based in Karachi. Extensive local and international travel may be required.

An appointment will be made subject to receipt of satisfactory references. The appointed candidate will be offered a salary that is commensurate with their experience and appropriate to the seniority of this position.
