Summary of Duties:

The Director of Marketing and Communication is responsible for developing innovative, creative, data-driven marketing strategies that reinforce the WSU brand and bolster awareness, respect and loyalty among all WSU Tri-Cities stakeholders. Supporting the goals and objectives set forth by the WSU Tri-Cities strategic plan, the Chancellor and the WSU system, this position is responsible for marketing, advertising, public/community relations, website, social media, events and internal communication. This position will prioritize activities that support student recruitment, enrollment and retention.The Director of Marketing and Communication must have a passion for team building and a strong commitment to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment. This position directs the operations of the MARCOM unit including hiring, training, supervising, evaluating and corrective action. The director is responsible for developing and administering unit and program budgets.

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, public relations, marketing, or other relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible professional level experience in public relations, marketing, print or broadcast media, or public relations, which has included at least three (3) years of managerial experience. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
  • Integrated marketing experience, including brand management as it relates to the functions of publications, electronic marketing communications, and advertising.
  • Professional communication skills including public speaking and the ability to write and speak persuasively about the institution to a variety of constituents including prospective students, current students, donors, alumni, legislators, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated leadership with strategic, policy, and budget planning experience in complex organizations.
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, administrative and supervisory skills to motivate and build staff competencies.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Relevant work experience in an institution of higher education or a comparable complex organization.
  • Experience with graphic design.
  • Relevant work experience marketing to and recruiting high school and community college students.
  • Relevant work experience marketing in a fund-raising campaign.
  • Professional skills using InDesign and Photoshop software.
  • Experience using the web as a marketing tool.
  • Professional writing and/or editing experience.
  • Relevant experience working with and marketing to diverse populations.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
