The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2020/2021 Academic Year, we currently enroll over 7,100 students in which 65% identify as Latinx, 9% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% as Black/African American, 18% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Providing instruction and services related to Child Development on the Madera Community College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the instructor/coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Teaching a full schedule of child development/early childhood education courses as assigned;
  • Assisting in the coordination of the Child Development Center;
  • Ensuring the accountability of licensing compliance;
  • Ensuring the maintenance of the physical environment that conforms to the State Department of Social Services licensing standards of health and safety;
  • Conducting Center inspections to ensure compliance;
  • Enrolling children, maintaining appropriate records on children, staff, and students in compliance with District requirements, licensing regulations and other legal and regulatory provisions;
  • Communicating with parents, staff and administrators related to Center operations and student progress;
  • Discussing issues of concern with parents;
  • Developing, monitoring and maintaining program budget;
  • Developing program goals for children, parents, staff and students;
  • Assisting in the planning, coordinating, directing and supervising the activities and staff of the Child Development Center;
  • Ensuring availability of appropriate materials and equipment for staff and children’s use;
  • Coordinating and conducting staff meetings and in-service training;
  • Developing and implementing grants and funding terms and conditions;
  • Actively participate in the local child care planning council and other community partnerships;
  • Assisting in integrating the Child Development Center and the Child Development studies programs;
  • Providing a model program developmentally appropriate child development for early care and education, students in teacher training, early childhood education students, and students in other disciplines;
  • Participating in student advisement;
  • Assisting in the placement, guidance and supervision of students from instructional programs;
  • Supervising students in child development labs and in off campus sites;
  • Meeting regularly with discipline/district peers;
  • Preparing grant proposals for external funding to support center operations;
  • Implementing appropriate practices to develop writing skills at all levels;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Participating in institutional activities including staff development;
  • Participating on community advisory committees related to early care and education initiatives;
  • Learning and applying emerging technologies and advances (E.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner;
  • Staying current on State regulations related to early childhood programs;
  • Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND

  • Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education; OR
  • Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential; OR
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

(Special requirements include a California Child Development Program Director’s Permit (or be able to obtain a permit within six (6) months of hire).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students;
  • Experience in preschool teaching and directing a licensed childcare program;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple programs;
  • Knowledge of child development and early childhood curriculum and teaching methods and techniques;
  • Preparedness to teach child development courses at all levels;
  • Familiarity and experience with organizations such as the California Training Consortium, Mentoring programs, California State Department of Education – Child Development Division, WestEd, NAEYC (National Organization for the Education of Young Children), and agencies that issues licenses and teaching credentials;
  • Expertise or experience with State Department of Human Services licensing regulations; state, local and federal categorical grant programs; childcare food programs; health and safety regulations; preparation of applications for child care funding; early child career education program management; NAEYC accreditation; PITC; and recruitment and supervision of staff;
  • Successful teaching experience in child development at the college level;
  • Knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes;
  • Experience in using technology in the instructional setting;
  • Evidence of and commitment to working as part of a team;
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills to interact productivity with a wide range of staff, students, consultants, government agencies and community members;
  • Experience collaborating with community partners;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:

177 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting annual salary is $60,678 – $91,350 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,270 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and the College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

Madera Community College at Oakhurst is a satellite campus of Madera Community College. It is located just 20 minutes from the South entrance to Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from the Sierra National Forest. The campus provides opportunity and access to higher education for a geographically isolated population in Eastern Madera County. The campus currently serves Oakhurst, Mariposa County, Coarsegold, North Fork and the surrounding communities with over 75 courses in a variety of study areas. The center is slated to open a new permanent campus in Fall 2021.

Organization

State Center Community College District (SCCCD) was formed in 1964 when it assumed control of Fresno City College and Reedley College. SCCCD serves approximately one million people and 18 unified and high school districts in more than 5,500 square miles of urban and rural territory, including most of Fresno and Madera counties and portions of Kings and Tulare counties. SCCCD is governed by a seven-member board of trustees who represent seven trustee areas. Total district enrollment for the fall semester 2012 is over 34,000 students. SCCCD is a merit system district with over 2,300 faculty and classified staff represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The total operating budget for SCCCD in 2012-13 is $168 million. 

Fresno City College, established in 1910, enrolls in excess of 22,000 students and offers more than 100 associate of arts and science degree programs and 60 certificate of achievement programs in vocational/occupational areas. Reedley College, established in 1926, is located in Reedley (approximately 25 miles southeast of Fresno) and enrolls approximately 6,200 students in a variety of courses and degree programs in occupational education and the arts and sciences. SCCCD operates three educational centers with a combined enrollment of approximately 8,300 students. The Willow International, Madera and Oakhurst centers offer programs in general education for transfer and two-year degrees. In addition, the district offers occupational and technical training at its Career and Technology Center and the Training Institute.
