The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Student Population.  California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona – nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020.  58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible.  The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International 3% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. 39% of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

College of Science

The College of Science’s mission is to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. It offers 15 undergraduate degree programs and six Master’s degrees across seven academic departments that include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. Our Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST) supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. The College has approximately 145 full-time faculty, 45 staff, 4,700 majors, and enrolls over 35,000 students each semester. Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion

The Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) Department supports the college’s mission to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. We believe in fostering curiosity and a culture of scientific discovery. Our department’s objective is to investigate ways to advance the art and science of health and human movement. The KHP department is growing with five new tenure-track faculty hired in the last three years. KHP offers two B.S. degree programs (General, with emphases in exercise science, health promotion, or socio-cultural, and Pedagogy) and an M.S. degree in Kinesiology (emphases in Exercise Physiology, Adapted Physical Education, and Curriculum and Instruction). 

The KHP department also manages the Motor Development Clinic (MDC). The MDC has been a cornerstone of the Cal Poly Pomona community for the past 40 years. It is an academic and research service-learning program where students work with diverse community members with disabilities. The Department supports laboratories in Biomechanics/Motor Neuroscience, Human Performance, Exercise Physiology, Mind and Heart Research, Psychophysiology, as well as the MDC. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate inside and outside the department.

The Kinesiology and Health Promotion faculty have expertise in pedagogy, children and adults with a disability, health promotion, stress management, cultural studies of sport and exercise, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. The faculty’s research interest can be found at KHP webpage

The Position: We are seeking an energetic and innovative candidate with expertise in adapted physical education/activity. The faculty member’s duties will include: 

  • Teaching adapted physical education discipline specific undergraduate and graduate courses. Including developing and/or revising courses within expertise.
  • Operating, overseeing, expanding and co-directing the Motor Development Clinic which serves the community and is run as a year-round teaching and research lab. 
  • Engaging in scholarly activity, including securing internal/external funding, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.  
  • Being active in professional societies and serving on department, college, and university committees. 

In addition, the candidate will be expected to assume duties of the adapted physical education added authorization credential specialist which includes: the placement, screening, acceptance, and approval of APE added authorization candidates and working closely with the Education Department on credential matters including staying up to date with California Teaching Credential (CTC) guidelines and Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA’s)

Minimum requirements:

  • Hold a Doctorate in Kinesiology/Adapted physical education, or a closely related field from an accredited institution by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service 
  • Show a commitment to working in an inclusive environment
  • Have a strong academic background in adapted physical education, movement disability, and disability populations 
  • Demonstrate potential to be effective in college teaching related to adapted physical education/adapted physical activity
  • Demonstrate potential for achievements in research, scholarly, and creative activities
  • A commitment and record of contributions to student success through applicant’s teaching, scholarship, or service, demonstrated by a Student Success Statement addressing at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.  
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:  

  • Teaching experience in K-12 adapted physical education setting
  • Additional training through experiential learning
  • An academic and research background in adapted physical education, movement disability, and disability population

Semi-Finalists for the position will also:

  • Provide three letters of reference (on letterhead, signed and dated within the past two years and uploaded to Interfolio by the recommender).
  • If selected as a finalist, candidates will be required to give a teaching lecture (topic shall be suggested by the search committee), as well as a scholarly presentation of their research to faculty and students.
  • Official transcripts are required of all finalists before the final interview.

An official transcript showing the highest degree will be required before the successful candidate starts in the 2022-2023 academic year.
