Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) is a member of the University’s Senior Leadership Team and President’s Cabinet. The CHRO is a trusted advisor and partner to other senior leaders and plays a critical role in supporting and advancing the University’s strategy and mission. The CHRO currently manages a budget of approximately $10 million and leads a team of approximately 100 individuals who serve almost 30,000 employees across the University community. The CHRO will have overarching responsibility for all human resource functions, programs, and activities, including recruiting, developing, retaining, and supporting a diverse and talented workforce, and partnering to maintain a productive, dynamic, and inclusive work environment.

A distinctive part of this leadership role is oversight of the human resource functions of UF Health – a world-class academic medical center and health system, which also encompasses community hospitals and an integrated network of clinics throughout the state of Florida, and beyond, which adds another 20,000 employees to the “One UF” portfolio.

The successful CHRO candidate will place emphasis on improved consistency, visibility, and oversight of key HR-related issues for the UF enterprise, especially those at touchpoints between the various organizations. The incumbent will provide meaningful support to all levels regarding human resources issues and assure the timely exchange of accurate information, reports, data, documents, trend to support management and decision-making processes. Above all, this person must exhibit and align with the core values of UF and be exceptional in people development and culture building.

The following critical success factors are the most critical to accomplish in year one to ensure success:

  • Develop proven, collaborative, and trusted working relationships with faculty deans and associate deans.
  • Develop an HR strategic plan and roadmap to support the evolution of the “One UF” model, which also strengthens and supports growth for the University of Florida and UF Health.
Expected Salary:

Expected starting salary is commensurate with education and experience. The University of Florida offers a generous benefits package.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in human resources, business, or related field and eight years of full-time, relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or related field and ten years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a history of executive level human resources leadership experience and accomplishments within a complex organization, preferably within a major research university — or with a large, complex healthcare organization or corporate environment, with a demonstrated track record of working effectively across all levels of an organization.

The CHRO will possess the following qualifications:

  • Specialty knowledge with associated, citable accomplishments in several of the following areas: compensation, benefits, recruitment, employee and labor relations, and information technology.
  • Progressively responsible track record of demonstrated successes of 10 or more years managing a diverse workforce in planning, organizational effectiveness, problem solving, facilitation, and decision-making skills and competencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise with a history of achievement in presenting and evaluating proactive and results-oriented human resources practices along with recommending courses of action for development by senior leadership.
  • Ability to work effectively and productively in a collaborative team capacity with creative approaches to organizational development opportunities for the enterprise.
  • Ability to create and implement effective communications strategies to broadly disseminate employee information regarding human resources strategies, objectives, priorities, and accountabilities. The CHRO will demonstrate the following characteristics.
  • Generalist background with broad working knowledge of employment, compensation, benefits, organizational planning, employee relations, labor relations, and training and development.
  • Strong management skills, including experience working with decentralized and entrepreneurial business units. Demonstrated knowledge of the laws, regulations, and executive orders relating to human resource and affirmative action/equal employment opportunity issues and concerns.
  • Demonstrated expertise in budget management and demonstrated success leading sizable teams.
  • Participative management style that advocates team collaboration with proven/persuasive skills in working with academic and operations constituencies.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple and diverse constituencies with a strong customer service commitment.
  • Demonstrated strong negotiation skills to successfully manage leadership and employee expectations in workforce management initiatives.
  • Ability to advise, consult, and coordinate with:
  • Senior management regarding organizational plans, succession plans, university wide policies, legal issues, and unit- or college-level issues affecting the workforce.
  • Financial affairs personnel regarding compensation/benefits expenses and budgets, plan design, and related systems, processes, and policies.
  • Ability to develop and promote “best in class” total rewards, staffing, development, and performance management of the university’s workforce. History of creating workforce plans and programs that align with and support overall strategic objectives.
  • A proven track record of fostering change management, process improvement, and development and implementation of effective and efficient business processes.
  • Previous success providing effective coaching to direct reports to optimize their capabilities by providing feedback, advice, and suggestions to ensure success.
  • Unquestionable ethics in establishing a workplace environment that promotes the dignity of people and the diversity of talent while enabling others to serve society.
