Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

The Pulmonary Biomechanics laboratory in the Department of Bioengineering at the Anschutz Medical campus is seeking skilled, passionate, and industrious applicants for a postdoctoral research fellow position. The successful candidate will develop and conduct research projects to investigate the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prevention of ventilator-induced lung injury. These studies may include in vivo experiments, computational modeling, and/or clinical data science.

Specific Position Details

The Smith Lab is a multidisciplinary team with a broad focus on lung physiology, lung injury, and mechanical ventilation. The lab is highly collaborative, working with other research groups across the Anschutz Medical Campus and at other institutions in the US and abroad.  This specific position is part of the project ‘Predicting and Preventing Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury’ (details here) that has the overarching goal of developing algorithms to optimize subject-specific lung protective ventilation during acute respiratory distress syndrome. This will be accomplished with in vivo experiments to generate acute and ventilator-induced lung injury while measuring lung mechanics, lung morphometry, and injury biomarkers. We are also collecting clinical ventilator data for model development and evaluation. Computational analyses of both the clinical and experimental data will identify the characteristics of injurious ventilation and predict subject-specific lung protective ventilation settings. The project team includes biologists, bioengineers, critical care physicians, and data scientists.

The ideal candidate will develop projects related to identifying injurious ventilation and determining how to optimally ventilate a particular subject based on the characteristics of the underlying lung injury. These studies may be experimental, computational, or some combination of those two approaches. The candidate will join a highly supportive team and will be provided with resources and mentoring to develop their own research interests and to develop new research skills. They must be highly motivated and willing to learn new techniques and approaches, and able to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team. For more specific questions about research projects, the nature of the position and duties, or any other enquiries or interest please contact Dr Bradford Smith: Bradford.Smith@cuanschutz.edu
