The Department of STEM Education (DSE) in the College of Education at Northern Arizona University (NAU) invites applications for a tenure-track scholar of science education at the rank of assistant professor beginning August 2022. The DSE at NAU is committed to strategically increasing its capacity to provide local and national leadership in science education through innovative undergraduate and graduate programs, and advanced research and scholarly activities.

Job Description

Responsibilities include teaching science education courses in the NAUTeach Program (the undergraduate joint secondary science and mathematics education program) and in the master’s and doctoral degree programs; scholarly activities in science/STEM education; field supervision of pre-service teacher candidates; graduate student advising; and faculty service.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned doctoral degree in science education or closely related field (degree conferred by 08/15/2022).
  • At least one year of secondary (middle or high school) science teaching experience as the instructor of record.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A demonstrated potential for independent research leading to peer reviewed publications and the securing of external research funding.
  • Experience teaching at the post-secondary level (including in-person, online, and hybrid modalities).
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
  • Strong science content preparation.
  • Active engagement in the science/STEM education scholarly community.
  • Three or more years' experience in teaching science at the secondary (middle or high school) level.
  • A demonstrated commitment to working with pre-service and in-service teachers.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative school partnerships.

General Information
The DSE offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in science education for pre-service and in-service science teachers as well as a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction. The department currently has 5 full-time faculty members and 2 classified staff. The department is also home to the Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL), which engages in a variety of research, professional learning, outreach, and evaluation projects. As the home of the highly regarded NAUTeach program, the DSE, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is responsible for the recruitment, advising, and student teaching supervision of secondary science and mathematics pre-service teachers. Collectively, the DSE and the CSTL offer unique opportunities for scholarly collaborations with faculty across campus. We are a vibrant, growing, and creative department dedicated to improving science education across the state and the nation.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications

$62,000 to $64,000


This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
